The term “User Story” is a relative new addition to our language and its definition is evolving. In today’s parlance, a complete User Story has three primary components, namely the "Card", the "Conversation", and the "Criteria". Different roles are responsible for creating each component.

The “Card” expresses a business need. A representative of the business community is responsible for expressing the business need. Historically (and for practical reasons) the “Card” is the User Story from the perspective of the business community. Since we wrote this book specifically to address that audience, we use the term “User Story” in that context throughout.

The “Conversation” is an ongoing discussion between a developer responsible for creating software that meets the business need and the domain expert(s) who defined it (e.g., the original author of the “Card”). The developer initiates the “Conversation” with the domain expert(s) to define the “Criteria” and any additional information the developer needs to create the application. There is much to be written about both the “Conversation” and the “Criteria”, but neither component is dealt with in any detail in this publication.

A well-written User Story (“Card”) can drastically reduce the time needed for the “Conversation”. It reduces misinterpretations, misunderstandings, and false starts, thereby paving the way for faster delivery of working software. We chose to limit the content of this publication to the “User Story” as understood by the business community to keep the book focused and address the widest possible audience.

I write user stories as part of my job and have done much research into what makes them most effective. This book does a wonderful job of providing specific examples and tips. I applied this book immediately and feel like anyone who writes user stories can immediately benefit from the advice in this book.

Okay for the price

You can probably find all of this information with a Google search, but for $2.99, it is all right there, so I took a chance. I would give it 4 stars if the section on non-functional requirements was better. The information is not a revelation, but it's easy to read and probably good for a new Agile user story writer.

THIS BOOK WILL FINALLY GET JOHNNY READING!

This book was written primarily for school psychologists, but I think any educator who is involved in helping children learn to read would find it beneficial, especially those on pre-referral intervention teams (e.g., SLP's, reading specialists, principals) and also special education teachers. I'm a school psychologist, and for years, helping kids with reading problems has been my passion, and therefore, I have read everything about the topic that I could find, especially publications through the National Association of School Psychologists, as well as classics like "Overcoming Dyslexia," by Sally Shaywitz. Therefore, I thought I was pretty expert in the area of reading, but after reading this book, I realized I knew very little of what really mattered. That is because the reading research is scattered across a large number of scientific journals, with which most psychologists and other educators are not familiar. Dr. Kilpatrick must have spent a tremendous amount of time seeking and synthesizing this research. For example, I knew that deficits in phonemic awareness were the primary cause of dyslexia, but I did not realize there is a developmental progression of sub-skills from basic to advanced, and that no commercially available test measures these skills in a developmentally appropriate way. I also knew that reading fluency/automaticity was critical for reading comprehension. However, I did not realize that the only fluency that actually matters is phonemic proficiency, since the latter is a prerequisite for a large sight word vocabulary (via orthographic mapping), upon which fluency is based. The current standard recommendation for improving fluency is repeated readings, even though such interventions do nothing to improve phonemic proficiency, and therefore, do not facilitate the development of a large sight word vocabulary necessary for fluency. I also did not realize that, despite its essential role in fluency, there is no commercially available test that measures phonemic proficiency. Reading this book also helped me understand puzzling findings I've often observed in schools; for example, why the most widely used reading screening test in elementary schools has so many false negatives, and also why the "best" comprehensive test of phonological processing on the market produces so many false negatives in high school. This book informs school based teams how to do intervention-oriented assessment for EVERY type of reading problem, of which there are several subtypes, at every age and level of reading. It also provides recommendations for interventions based on the assessment results. Most importantly, the interventions that are recommended are NOT the type that will produce a measly gain in reading that is nevertheless statistically significant and thus pleasing to researchers, but still leaves the child two or more years behind grade level in reading! These interventions have been shown by research to produce CLINICALLY MEANINGFUL results with very large gains, and if started early enough, can prevent or cure most reading disabilities altogether. But even learning disabled adults have significantly improved their reading skills through the recommended interventions. If you are serious about helping kids with reading, this book is truly essential. If all schools implement it, maybe Johnny will finally be able to read!

This book bridges the research-to-practice gap better than any other I have read in my career as a psychologist. As someone who has conducted special education evaluations and worked with children with learning disabilities for many years, I have read widely in this field but have never encountered a book so thoroughly researched, well-argued, and clinically astute. I expect this book to have a profound impact on my clinical practice, both in assessment and intervention. Wonderful, authoritative book on reading. It is very up to date, cites reputable research from entities not involved in selling curricular materials, and leads to an important understanding about how young children should be taught literacy. We could minimize the number of children who have reading problems ... we just need to rely on good evidence. We examine food labels carefully before we purchase the product, why not pay the same attention to the instructional materials schools choose for K-2 students?

Brilliant, Faithful, Existentially Satisfying

To avoid prepping for the General Ordination Exams (that I take in two days!), I've been commenting on various year-end lists. On one "Top Theology Books of 2012," I suggested that the author check out Fleming Rutledge's collection of Old Testament sermons. It's brilliant and accessible; existentially satisfying and faithful to the biblical texts. When I simply can't bring myself to pick up the Bible, or find my own ears and eyes completely deaf and blind to it, her clear yet round-about proclamation always seems to penetrate my numbness: unclogging my ears and unscaling my eyes. Rutledge's corpus has served as a daily devotional for most of this year.

Great Devotional-Quality Book of Sermons

When did you last hear a series of sermons that deeply engage the Christian Old Testament? Rev. Fleming Rutledge provides in "And God Spoke to Abraham" a rich resource for Christians looking for serious engagement with Old Testament texts.

Rutledge is an evangelical Anglican who has served numerous churches and traveled widely as a guest speaker. Reading a sermon is never the same as hearing a sermon but they still provide a window into one congregation's engagement with the Bible. The sermons are short enough that I could read one as my daily devotional. Recommended!

Outstanding collection of sermons on the OT

In my opinion Fleming Rutledge is the best expository preacher in the US. This collection of sermons on texts from the Old Testament is an outstanding resource for preachers who seek to address the full canon of scripture, "the whole counsel of God" and for laity who wish to wrestle with the God who speaks and acts in history. Highly recommended!
