Dr David Whittaker is a Lecturer at Birkbeck College, University of London. His research interests are in the areas of Nigerian and African literature and in the field of postcolonial studies and he has published a number of articles in journals and anthologies.

Dr Mpalive-Hangson Msiska is a Senior Lecturer in English and Humanities at Birkbeck College, University of London. He has published many books, journal articles and conference papers on postcolonial literature, critical and cultural theory and identity.

Not the actual story

I bought this in an attempt to help my sister with an English project, but it is not the actual novel and instead was a discussion of the original work and other works seen to be related to Achebe's, "Things Fall Apart." I was very disappointed in that there was no indication of it not being the real story, as translations and edited versions of books often have another person's name tacked on it. Hopefully the actual version of the book will make it to Kindle, but for now only the printed edition is available.

I too was very disappointed in finding out only after purchasing that this was not the actual book. Being my very first purchase I felt that this description was very misleading. I certanly hope that kindle recognizes this as a problem as I find it hard to believe that I just happened upon the one and only misrepresented book description. Now back to the users guide to find out how and even if I can receive a refund for the purchase of this book. Buyers beware.

A Critical Muddle

This book is a shame in relation to its stated mission to offer a guide to the iconic novel Things Fall Apart in the boader context of its history, politics, culture, and sociology. There is some confusion about the book's design. The compilers ("authors" is inapplicable here) make little attempt to extend understanding of the novel as a work of art. Apart from the not-particularly informative Introduction and prefaces to its various sections, the volume comprises in the main of excerpted essays. The collators of these documents present an alternative approach readers have taken to the novel, and then look for an excerpt from an essay to illustrate it. The down-side to this approach is that anyone seriously looking for comprehensive knowledge would be better off consulting the full essay in its original source. All still in print and readily available, none of these essays is by any account inaccessible; therefore, the volume is not as invaluable as hoped. The compilers' approach will disappoint readers who are already familiar with the excerpted essays. Lacking in novelty, I'll take any of the competing titles over this over-priced one anyday. At any event, this book could not have been conceived for the specialist; it does not treat its subject at an adequate level of rigor. Being far too derivate, it will not be much use either to the beginning student.

Just the tips..

With nearly 9% unemployment there is a tremendous amount of competition in the marketplace for open positions. Sometimes the smallest factors can get a candidate hired.. or passed up for a great job. Having worked as an executive recruiter for 6yrs I can't stress enough the importance of interview fundamentals, be it the proper format and content of a resume, attire for an interview, company due diligence, demeanor, posture or even hygiene. Ryan through his show and now this book does a fantastic job of identifying key points all interviewees should be aware of. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to start their career but also to those looking for a comprehensive review and recap of information they are aware of.

Great Tips!

It was refreshing to get a real world perspective on what I should be doing during my job search. The resume writing and interviewing skills I received from my academic advisers was very stale and generic and didn't really relate to the career field I'm looking in. It was incredibly helpful to receive guidance on MY career goals from an "outside the box" expert!

Lynch blends biography, filmography, spiritual quotes and his philosophical perspective on the life-changing capabilities of transcendental meditation, all within two and a half hours. Having practiced meditation for three decades, director Lynch discusses how it has influenced his life and helped him to concentrate his energy. Listeners may catch glimpses of creativity and consciousness, but Lynch's rants lack cohesion and substance. Within the audiobook's short chapters, Lynch barely broaches a topic before moving onto the next, leaving listeners to question his emphasis to go "deep." The most interesting aspects arise out of his anecdotes and comments about his films, like Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. His dry rattling voice hints at the passion behind his statements, but more often comes across as insistent and almost whiny. He reminds listeners that authors do not always make the best voices for their books. However, on the sound production end, the lightly blowing wind for the quotes from the Upanishads and Sutras adds mystical air to their reading. It's unfortunate that neither his words nor his voice live up to that standard.

It is just o.k., Lynch's thoughts on life, meditation, etc., in small easy to read doses.

I read some of the reviews and was curious about David Lynch's connection with meditation and his creativity. I'll admit I have only seen one Lynch product (Blue Velvet) which I found to be an excellent though bizarre film. The book kind of goes through his thoughts on life, meditation, making films and creative methods. It is a short read and feels like reading someone's thoughts that are jotted down in no particular order. I guess I was looking for a book that would really getting into the hows and whys of Mr. Lynch's creative process and meditation method vs. short thoughts, feelings and opinions. I guess if you are a huge fan of Mr. Lynch this book would give you bits and pieces of his thought process. Overall, I thought the book was just o.k.

Meditation, Creativity, and Film

This book has a lot of interesting information in it. David Lynch talks about his experience with Transcendental Meditation and its positive effects on him. He also talks about his strategies for living a life as an artist. And there are several different pages about the movies he's made, the actors in them, and his thoughts on film in general.

His biggest points are the importance of healthy living, the importance of meditation, and being your natural self. His advice for creativity, I thought, was pretty helpful for just about any artistic medium.

The book is pretty short. It doesn't go super in depth into any one topic. Mr. Lynch spends about a page or two on each idea. It's really interesting to hear everything in his direct voice, but some more detail would have been nice.

I loved how positive David Lynch seemed in the whole book. About the biggest thing I took from the book was his advice on being healthy yourself. He says, for an artist, you have to understand things like depression to create conflict in a story. But, if you, yourself, are depressed, it will be very hard to create. So he suggests different ways throughout the book to keep yourself healthy and still make art.

This was a great way to see into David Lynch's world through his own words. There's lots of great words, advice, and information, but it is very brief. But, if you're interested in David Lynch and his approach to life strategy, it's a great book.

An evening with David Lynch

I should start off my review by saying that I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly. I purchased this book partially on whim after hearing verry little about it. I've always been fascinated by art and have been a musican since I was verry young. Recently I've been creativity frustrated and have been branching out into various adventures from exploring more interesting film to starting a modest meditation practice.

I recived my copy of the book after getting off work and finished it verry quickly. It's a verry easy read, its only 180 pages and around 80 something chapters. Each of the chapters explore various topics from film makers David Lynch admires to his meditation practice. This book feels like sitting down with David Lynch for an evening and just enjoying his unique perspective of the world. I treasure this book and it has inspired me.

Gracias a Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet's Cuba Travel Guide was wonderful. The two guys who wrote this guide and their adventurous Cuban driver were outstanding. There were two books about Cuba that were invaluable to me in traveling and trying to understand a little about this fascinating country. One was Julia Zweig's book, "What everyone should know about Cuba" and Lonely Planet. Two examples: Lonely Planet's description of Cuba as "A Prince in Tattered Clothing" couldn't have been more accurate. But what I found both amusing and impressive was the accurate detail about this quickly changing country. There is a hotel in Cienfuegos that Lonely Planet mentioned that had tennis courts but no fence to stop the balls from rolling away as far as their momentum would take them. We went to the hotel and saw the two tennis courts which had no fences to stop the tennis balls exactly as described in Lonely Planet. What a useful guide. ���Gracias a Lonely Planet!!! Good but somewhat lacking in detailed historical information about places and buildings (including hotels). Okay map but could use more and larger foldout maps. Changes are occurring rapidly and outrunning any annual publication.

Initially before I left I was pretty happy with this book

Initially before I left I was pretty happy with this book, however when put into practice it was useless. Simple information was missing, for example, under "Money Matters" it would have been nice to know that only Visa cards can be used in ATMs, but if you only have a mastercard you can get money out in a bank. This is not new and pretty important information.

Great Read-Aloud for Kindergarten Class

Bought for my kindergarten classroom, this story is simple for me to read aloud and works as a great introduction to Harriet Tubman. It tends to be difficult to find books that introduce important people for Black History Month, and this is now one of my favorites! Allows for discussion on complex topics for little minds. Would be great to include in a class library for second grade (independent reading levels).

It's a very, very short book; however, I'm grateful to have it as a tool to teach my six year old about our history. This is a very difficult topic to discuss. I would like a book that explains the underground railroad. The way this book reads, one would think there was a train and a conductor. Ha!

About the Author

Dr. Murari P. Singh (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) is the President of Safe Technical Solutions, Inc (SAFETSOL). Dr. Singh has been involved in the design, development and analysis of industrial turbomachinery for more than thirty years with Turbodyne Corporation, Dresser Industries, Dresser-Rand Company, GE CONMEC and most recently with GE Oil & Gas as Consulting Engineer. Dr. Singh has extensive knowledge and experience with fatigue and fracture mechanics, stress and vibration of structures, reliability, life analysis, probabilistic analysis. His practical application experience includes a variety of rotating equipments including Warm Gas and FCC Expanders, Steam Turbines and Centrifugal Compressors. He developed the widely used SAFE diagram for reliability evaluation of turbine blades. The SAFE diagram methodology is superior to other current methods in providing clear analytical and predictive information. This concept has been applied to other turbomachineries. It is a significant contribution to design methods and vibration technology for the evaluation of turbine blade reliability. For many years, Dr. Singh has been involved in (developing and teaching) application of lifing strategy to many mechanical components, this includes hcf, lcf, creep, fracture mechanics. Probabilistic estimation is used to estimate risk in design. He is the co-author of the book "Steam Turbine, Design, Application, and Rerating", second edition published by McGraw-Hill Co.

Dr. George M. Lucas, PE, is a registered Professional Engineer with over 34 years of experience in the design, analysis and operation of steam turbines and large rotating equipment. As Director of Engineering for Dresser-Rand’s Wellsville Steam Turbine Operation, George was directly responsible for product design, steam path engineering, turbine performance, and manufacturing engineering for their custom engineered process drive steam turbines and steam turbine generators. He was directly responsible for the design of over 100 custom engineered steam turbines and contributed to the design and development of several Engineered Steam Turbine product families. Mr. Lucas was Design Project Leader for the joint Dresser-Rand/EPRI project that resulted in the successful commissioning of the 110 MW gas turbine/expander train at PowerSouth Electric Cooperative’s McIntosh Compressed Energy Storage Plant. Mr. Lucas received B. Sc. (1975) and M. Eng. (1976) degrees from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He holds two U.S. patents and has authored technical papers on topics including the use of advanced seals in steam turbines, compressed air energy storage and the development of advanced steam turbines for syn-gas compressor drive service. Mr. Lucas is currently an independent consultant serving OEM and end-user clients in oil and gas, power generation, and manufacturing industries.

The book "Blade Design and Analysis for Steam Turbines" provides a unique compendium of all concepts, basic analytical formulas and techniques needed to cope with design of industrial steam turbines flowpath (blades) components.
While there is a wider literature on large steam turbines applied in power generation, very few books are covering or focusing on industrial steam turbines for mechanical drive applications. Mechanical drive applications are especially demanding in requiring to steam turbines capability to adapt to variable speed and variable loads, challenging the design of flowpath components. Present book from Dr. Singh is one of the few books covering these challenges and presenting a very good summary of 30 years expertise achieved in mechanical drive steam turbines design.
The book "Blade Design and Analysis for Steam Turbines" is very well covering the challenges of design for dynamic behavior and vibration of industrial steam turbines blades. It moves from guidance to vibration behavior of bladed disk system (chapter 7), to damping concepts and damper system design (chapter 6), to methods (simplified and detailed) to estimate dynamic stresses (Chapter 7), to guidance to perform High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) assessment of blades including the effects of residual stresses and giving useful guidance on fatigue resistance correction factors (Chapter 8), to a review of manufacturing methods and design solutions (Chapter 3).
The book represents a basic reading for those who are approaching the design of blades for variable speed mechanical drive industrial steam turbines.

Good technical content, but needs much better editing

The folks who wrote this obviously know what they are doing, but the text is either poorly edited, or written by someone for whom English is a second language. The text has a large number of grammatical errors, dropped words, etc. It can require several readings of a paragraph to grasp what is being said. In addition, there are a number of instances where mathematical terms are not defined (or defined in translated English), making it difficult to understand what is being presented. Apart from these foibles, it is a very good book.

The book from Dr. Singh and Mr. Lucas is a book focused on the key design factors and challenges for steam turbine/ turbomachinery equipment : the flowpath blading. They present a very good summary of 30+ years of expertise achieved in mechanical drive steam turbines design. As steam turbines develop further into new applications where cyclic duty and part-power settings are even more important(such as in the concentrated solar power production field), the relevance to this blade design knowledge and suitable guidance for acceptable design is even more significant.

This text book covers the overall design knowledge of industrial steam turbines blades/ disks including a very methodic and detailed review of dynamic behavior and vibrations. The book builds knowledge very progressively from guidance on blade materials and construction, to overall stress and damage mechanisms, to methods to estimate dynamic stresses in performing High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) assessment of blades, to a final assessment of blade life improvement options and summarizing the life cycle risks.

Although there are some areas where editing of text could be improved, this book is a great technical reference and baseline for all those who are approaching the design of blades for application in variable speed mechanical drive industrial steam turbines.

About the Author
Robert Beatty lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and three daughters who help create and refine his stories. He loves to explore the grand Biltmore Estate and the darkened forest trails where his novels take place. Mr. Beatty's Disney-Hyperion novel "Serafina and the Black Cloak" became a New York Times Bestseller the first week it was launched and remain on the list for 20 weeks. He writes full-time now, but in his past lives, he was one of the early pioneers of cloud computing, the founder/CEO of Plex Systems, the co-founder of Beatty Robotics, and the chairman/CTO of Narrative Magazine. In 2007, he was named an Entrepreneur of the Year. When asked about the inspiration for his book, Robert said, "Serafina's journey grew out of my desire to write a story about an unusual and heroic young girl for my three daughters."

Robert Beatty does it again!

I found this series last November, my family and I were planning a trip to Biltmore and Serafina and the Black Cloak came up in a search I did looking for books about Biltmore. I read the book straight through in one evening because I could not put it down! The writing/storytelling style took me back to my childhood, when my dad would tell me bedtime stories. Not only was the story thoroughly enjoyable I loved the insight that it gave into the house, reading the book and then touring the house made the story come alive even more. I applied for the SART (Serafina Advanced Reading Team) and was blessed with an advanced copy of the sequel. It's sequel, Serafina and the Twisted Staff took me on a magical journey back to Asheville, NC with characters that I love and a surprise twist that I never saw coming. In Black Cloak, Serafina discovered the mystery of who she was but as you'll read in Twisted Staff, she wasn't quite finished coming into her own. This book combines self-discovery with the power of friendship and the important life lesson of facing your problems and not running away from them. In Twisted Staff Serafina makes new friends, and enemies; meets with disaster and triumphs in the end; finds her own power, and recognizes the power of her friends. Robert Beatty is an absolute master of his craft combining fantasy with reality and fact with fiction. There's never a dull moment, and I truly felt that I was right there in the story and not just a subtle observer.

PAGE TURNER!

I had the opportunity to be a part of an "advanced reader" group and cannot say enough good things about this book! I was so excited to get to continue the story of Serafina, which I was completely taken in by in "Black Cloak". This book DEFINITELY does not disappoint. It is a total page turner! I realize this is a young readers book and I am a 30-something, but I really feel like it has no age limit. It's entertaining and highly suspenseful. The continuation of Serafina's personal story along with a new adventure were excellent reading. Robert Beatty has done a great job in continuing this saga and I CANNOT WAIT for the 3rd installment. If you liked the first one, I would be HIGHLY surprised if you did not LOVE this one. Serafina has really grown and started to come into her own.

IT COSTS ME twice as much to read Serafina and the Twisted Staff. I purchase one copy for myself, and one copy for my Goddaughter (who is also my niece). But, ssh. She doesn’t know yet, unless she’s reading this. In which case…SURPRISE, BABY GIRL!

In this dazzling and magical sequel, New York Times best selling author, Robert Beatty continues to weave an enchanting tale centered at Biltmore Estate, a magnificent and very real 250-bedroom mansion nestled in the forested mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. I was captivated by this heart-stopping adventure about thrilling secrets and dangerous mysteries—as a courageous Serafina embraces her destiny to overcome a darkness set into motion long before The Man in the Black Cloak (Serafina 1).

Despite the discovery of her origins, twelve-year-old Serafina finds herself lonelier and more confused than ever before as she struggles to find acceptance.
