Great Book!!

This is a great book, especially as devotionals go! It's great for teens and young adults, and it is humurous, yet also telling us how great our God is and makes us realize how we can better serve God through our lives. If you like this book, a great book to go along with it is, I Kissed Dating Goodbye, by Joshua Harris. Don't judge the book by it's name- it tells of a "new" way to date and get out of the dating game for christians.

The Subtitle Says It All!

The book contains a great introduction to "virtual analog" synths which applies regardless of whether its a Cakewalk product or not. Each chapter dives into the depths of a specific Cakewalk synth, many of which are bundled with various Cakewalk products, so this book is like an addendum to the owner's manual. I don't consider myself a synth "tweakhead" so I found this book EXACTLY what I needed! For musicians who like to tweak their synths instead of simply playing the Presets, this is the book that explains what you're doing when you adjust those knobs, dials and sliders. Very nice!

All you need is a host program (Cakewalk's Sonar, Home Studio or Project5 will be fine) and you've already got some of these synths in your software arsenal. You can download some of these synths for free from Cakewalk! I recommend purchasing Dimension Pro. I've been playing around with Z3TA+ and am eyeballing Rapture as well. These are serious studio quality synths, each with a TON of power. This book details how to harness that power and put it to work in your music.

Dimension Pro/Rapture Users Delight

This book is a rare gem on a topic near and dear to my heart (Since first laying my eyes on an Arp Odyssey), but often not expounded upon with enough detail. Simon Cann, however, has provided a very deep source book for Cakewalk users in general, as well as a detailed guide for comprehending wavetable and sampling synthesis.
I am still slogging through the almost infinite presets which come with Dimension Pro and Rapture, as well as drilling down into creating my own sounds. I highly recommend this book to anyone with the desire to get down and spend some serious time creating their own sounds with the VSTs and AUs of today! If the competition (NI - Arturia -IK) would only provide similar guides, the sonic world could be a greater and more creative place. These plug-ins have become complicated enough to warrant such manuals and I salute Mr. Cann for his efforts!

Indispensible guide to all Cakewalk/RGC synths

A lot of synth/DAW books are published, and 90% of them are just rehashes of the manual published as quickly as possible. The exceptions are few (Kurt Kurasaki's Power Tools for Reason 3.0 jumps to mind) and this superb one.
Simon Cann goes into meticulous detail about many of the synths included with various versions of Sonar, Cakewalk Home Studio and Project5. The book is slightly dated being published in 2006, but if you use Rapture, Dimension, or especially sfz or the sfz format you need to invest in this book before you buy any other. (I have to confess I'm such a nerd that I covered it with clear contact plastic to keep it from wearing out, and keep it next to my bed.)

About the Author
Mark Q. Sutton began his career in anthropology in 1968.� While still in high school, he took advantage of the opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations conducted by the local Community College. He went on to earn a BA (1972), an MA (1977), and a Ph.D (1987) in anthropology.� He has worked as an archaeologist for the US Air Force, the US Bureau of Land Management, various private consulting firms, and taught at a number of community colleges and universities.� He taught at California State University, Bakersfield from 1987 to 2007 where he retired as Emeritus Professor of Anthropology.� He now works for Statistical Research, Inc. in San Diego.� Dr. Sutton works on understanding hunter-gatherer adaptations to arid environments but has also investigated entomophagy, prehistoric diet and technology, and optimal foraging theory.� Dr. Sutton has worked at more than 120 sites in North America and has published over 160 books, monographs, and papers on archaeology and anthropology.

Absolutely essential for every test taker

The short story is that this book is absolutely incredible, worth every penny, and increased my LR performance from getting 15 wrong every time to getting only four wrong every time. BUY IT, especially before you do any other kind of prep. Give yourself a month to get through it. It gives you concrete methods for how to attack every problem type.

The long story:

I had a roundabout way of getting to the point where I ordered this book. I took a Kaplan course and hated it. I did all of the homework and dedicated my life to the course for a month straight. It wasn't working. My score went from a 160 on the diagnostic to a 152, then a 154. The 160 diagnostic enabled me to enroll in their advanced course, but the course was completely unhelpful. Kaplan's methods aren't methods; they just say things like "oh, that is out of the scope, so it's wrong". Well, how do I know it's out of the scope? You don't. Or, you could probably figure it out, but that takes tons of time and on the LSAT you don't have tons of time. Kaplan does not give concrete reasons that can be applied to every question of the same type for determining why something is or isn't correct. The course wasn't working for me or improving my score, so after three weeks (the course was five weeks total), I dropped it. What a waste of over $1000.

I decided to get private tutoring. The tutoring company I used was brilliant for games, but also very expensive and I had already dropped a ton of money on the Kaplan course. I decided I'd look into using a book for LR instead. And I am saying this now to everyone who has not yet started prepping for the LSAT: BUY THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU TAKE A CLASS OR GET TUTORING OF ANY KIND. GIVE YOURSELF A MONTH WITH THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU DO ANY KIND OF LR PREP WHATSOEVER. This will save you a ton of money - the book is a HUGE bargain and worth every penny. It will also give you an excellent foundation for learning how to do every single kind of problem, and it is likely that you will not have to do any other kind of prep (ie tutoring or a class) once you read this book. You will obviously have to do a lot of practice problems and tests, but you won't need any other kind of instruction as to how to do the problems.

The main reason I like this book is it gives you an actual method as to how to do each problem type. My problem wasn't that I didn't understand why the right answer was right, it was that I couldn't finish in time, so I a) had to guess on the last five problems and b) sped up and my accuracy went out the window. By using the methods in this book, I was able to cut down on time for these problems so that I now always finish with at least three minutes to spare. The methods tell you how to look at a problem, what to look for, what is a likely incorrect answer (so that when you see it you can eliminate it very quickly without being tempted), and what a correct answer looks like. The most helpful piece of advice they give is that there is an identifiable and clear correct answer out of each of the choices. By using these methods, I was able to figure out what that answer was quickly, or at least figure out what the wrong answers were quickly.

The other thing to be said about this is that it is a long book. It's over 500 pages. GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME TO GET THROUGH IT. Skimming it, or just reading the methods, will not help you. You have to practice them until they become second nature. And you also have to give yourself enough time to actually get through all of the pages. I worked full time while getting through this, and I spent my lunch hour every day working through it, and was able to get through it in just over a month.

You can't expect this to work miracles overnight. But if you put in the time, it will help you increase your speed and accuracy without ever having to pay for a course or tutoring. Or, it will at least give you a sense of what kinds of problems you have trouble with, and then you can get the most out of tutoring by being efficient about it and targeting your weak areas. Or even if you don't get tutoring, you will know what kinds to practice.

I wasted $1000 before I picked this wonderful book up. Don't repeat my mistake. Use this as a first line of defense, and see just how far it will get you in your quest for a great LSAT score.

Note: I have not gotten my official LSAT score back yet. However, I did finish both LR sections with time to spare, and in practice exams, I had consistently gotten no more than four wrong on the LR sections in the past five tests i'd taken.

Use 7Sage Instead

While this book is helpful, I found an online curriculum called 7Sage to be much more helpful. This book seems to miss some fundamental conceptual ideas behind the questions, while focusing too much on "easy" fixes to get you to the right answer. While that might work for the majority of the questions, if you're looking to be a mid-170s scorer, you need that conceptual background to get the curve-breaker questions correct. I got that background in a much easier manner and more quickly through 7Sage, and so I'd honestly recommend that program over buying this book. 7Sage focuses on things like the concepts that link principle and sufficient assumption questions, rather than teaching those in isolation the way this book does.

Great LSAT Prep Book

I used all three Powerscore books when studying for the LSAT and this was the best; I also recommend the Logic Games Bible (the Reading Comprehension Bible wasn't as helpful, mainly because I think it's a really hard section to study for). It completely changed (in a good way) the way I did the logical reasoning questions - my scores on practice tests greatly improved. It breaks down each type of question and teaches you how to do them quickly. It takes some time to go through the book but it's totally worth it!

This techie guide is a detailed description of the many ways Slack can make life easier both personally and professionally. Many chapters end by summarizing the big ideas, which is an ideal way to reach both the expert and novice user. The case studies make Slack's functionality very authentic, as well as adding interest. Yancey's choice of language is articulate and concise without being superfluous. Well done!

This is a great book for those who do not have Ninja Tech skills. The graphics were clean and provide a handy reference. There were plenty of examples of applications and case studies that should entice any users to employ Slack in their environment. The tone is user-friendly and written with a charm that makes you think Yancey is your own personal coach.

Although I haven't previously used the Slack platform, I love finding the most efficient way of doing things, particularly when between work, life and personal commitments there never seem to be enough hours in the day. Friends frequently say I "have an app for everything!" so an all-in-one electronic platform (complete with an app version) certainly interests me. Yancey's Ultimate Guide to Slack is a well-written, to the point guide, and having read it I feel I could open Slack now and be ready to go. I particularly like the list of shortcuts, commands and add-ons included - something I could easily print and hang at my desk while I become familiar with the platform. Images throughout the book help too, so for those of us who aren't keen on reading page after page of solid text, this is a great feature. For the time poor, each chapter has a short bulleted summary too, so you can pick up the basics in a matter of minutes.
