The first of three parts, "Liminal Lexicality," documents lexical usage and variation in deaf, Jewish, Japanese, and other communities. "Queerspeak" looks at "computer-mediated text" (E-mail), homophobic slang, media reports, and literary language to conclude whether characteristics specific to gay and lesbian speech must be found exclusively in speech to label them as "gay." Finishing the volume, "Linguistic Gender-bending" examines the fluid nature of gender and sexuality and how that may be seen in the conscious use of language as it applies to hermaphrodites, the castrated hijras of India, Nigerian transvestites, Yoruba priests, Parisian gays, and Japanese same-sex couples. Lavender linguistics at its finest.

I bought this book on a whim, and have found it compelling reading ever since. It contains excellently written essays which very thoroughly explore their immediate subject. As a book on linguistics, however, be prepared for occasionally arcane essays like "The Colour of His Eyes: Polari and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence". If you are interested in language issues and would like to broaden your world-view, I can't recommend this book enough.
My favourite line, from the essay on Gay Man's English: "Honey, what you see is what you get!" Fortunately, with this book, you get more than what you see.

Explores disability, queerness, home---beautiful writing.

Eli Clare writes with passion, insight and a poet's sense of language. This is a difficult book to describe as it contains a series of interlinking essays which explore disability, environmentalism, being queer, being gendered, abuse and the meaning of home. As I read this description, I realize it somehow shrinks the real scope of the work and makes it sound like a dry discourse. The reality is that Eli talks about all of these issues through the lens of her own experiences as a lesbian with cerebral palsy who feels deep and abiding love for her childhood home on a river in Oregon. Reading this book, is like having the most delicious and thought provoking conversation with a good friend. It leaves one thinking for days. I've been passing it around my group of friends to rave reviews by all.

exquisitely powerful

Clare weaves personal experiences with politicalideologies--clarifying connecting issues and pointing out thesimilarities and challenges that we face in working through them. Thisbook struck me at emotional and mental levels and has left me with a great deal to think about. One excellent aspect is how to she explains that solutions may never be as simple as we want them to be, but taking the time to understand multiple stories and multiple levels of truth will help us to reach new heights of achievement and equality. I would also strongly recomment Pushing the Limits, ed by Shelley Tremain and Restricted Access, ed by Victoria Brownworth--both collections of works by a diverse group of queer women with disabilities.

This book changed my life

This is an excellent book for disabled queers like myself, and the author, Eli Clare. The book is easily read--Clare uses language that is not pretentious, but establishes a voice that is eloquently compelling. "Exile" masquerades as autobiographical but contains a powerful critique of the social constructions of class, disability, sexuality, race, gender, the environment and just about everything else you could imagine (I know this might seem impossible--but Clare accomplishes it in this wonderful book). I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Donita D'Amico, RN, M.Ed. Donita D'Amico, a diploma nursing school graduate, earned her baccalaureate degree in nursing from William Paterson College. She earned a Master's degree in Nursing Education at Teacher's College, Columbia University with a specialization in Adult Health. Ms. D'Amico has been a faculty member at William Paterson University for more the twenty five years. Her teaching responsibilities include physical assessment, medical-surgical nursing, nursing theory, and fundamentals in the classroom, skills laboratory, and clinical settings. Donita D'Amico coauthored several textbooks. "Health Assessment in Nursing" and its companion clinical handbookby Sims, D'Amico, Stiesmeyer and Webster. She co-authored "Comprehensive Health Assessment: A Student Workbook" and "Modules for Medication Administration" with Dr. Colleen Barbarito. Ms. D'Amico is active in the community. Within the university, she is a charter member of the Iota Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. She continues to serve at the chapter and state levels. She also serves as a consultant and contributor to local organizations. Colleen Barbarito, Ed.D., RN Colleen Barbarito received a nursing diploma from Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduated with a baccalaureate degree from William Paterson College, and earned a Master's degree from Seton Hall University, all in New Jersey. She received her Doctor of Education from Teacher's College, Columbia University. Prior to a position in education, Dr. Barbarito's clinical experiences included medical-surgical, critical care, and emergency nursing. Dr. Barbarito has been a faculty member at William Paterson University since 1983, where she hastaught physical assessment and a variety of clinical laboratory courses for undergraduate nursing students and curriculum development at the graduate level. Dr. Barbarito co-authored two books with Donita D'Amico--"Modules for Medication Administration" and "Comprehensive Health Assessment: A Student Workbook. "She published articles on anaphylaxis in "American Journal of Nursing "and "Coping with ""Allergies and Asthma," Her research includes physical assessment and a collaboration on revising a physical assessment project with results published as a brief in "Nurse Educator. "As a faculty member, Dr. Barbarito participated in committees to explore curricular change and to develop multimedia learning modules for critical thinking. Dr. Barbarito is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She was an officer and serves as Faculty Advisor for the Iota Alpha Chapter at William Paterson University.

I really liked the way that the book is organized

This was a very helpful book for assessments. It tells you exactly what to do and is a very visual book. There are many pictures to help with the correct placements for the assessments and it even tells you which findings are normal and which are not. I really liked the way that the book is organized. Complete system assessments make up a chapter such as " cardiac, gastrointestinal..ect" the book even includes questions as the end of the chapters to help evolve your critical thinking. I needed this book for class but I am keeping it even after ad a reference to look back on.

BEWARE! I purchased my book new from amazon and it arrived in perfect condition shrink wrapped with access code. However when I tried to use the code, it would not allow me to register the book. When I contacted Pearson about why it would not work, they told me they do not guarantee any access codes purchased from third parties. (only from your bookstore or through their website.) therefore i ended up buying a new book for an access code I cannot use. I HATE PEARSON BOOKS. There customer service is awful and their products are not guaranteed. Good luck if you have to utilize the access code.

And I love just how loaded with information that this book is, which comes in really handy for someone like me who isn't exactly a pro in the kitchen. I live in Los Angeles and Egg Shop is always one of my first stops when visiting NYC. So when I found out they were releasing a cookbook I immediately pre-ordered it so I could enjoy my fav dishes year round. And it does not disappoint - it goes above and beyond the dishes in their restaurant to give you a full step-by-step on how to become an egg cooking pro. It's also written in a humorous, light-hearted way that makes you actually want to read it (and not just look at the photos). Highly recommend it for anyone who loves brunch, egg sandos or omelettes for dinner!

Amazing

This is the amazing, inspirational story of DDNard who woke up one morning widowed with a baby and three million in debt. Rather than drowning in sorrow, she applied ancient teachings to her thinking and goals and emerged stronger, and considerably richer, than ever before. Reading this, it is easy to see why she is such a well respected spiritual teacher in Thailand. I would consider this is one of those rare books that will truly change your life.

I personally have realized quite a few things about how I view everyday situations and events with the help of DDNARD's writing. One of the biggest things I need to change is being mindful of my thoughts and actions each and every day. Every section of this book is concise and incredibly well thought out with thought provoking examples and stories to back up each point that is being made. I know I will be rereading this book in the future to ensure that I truly do not forget these life changing lessons that have been given.

I cannot speak highly enough of this book and it is one that I would recommend to absolutely anyone because even though self-reflection is tough, it is a much needed step for each and every one of us to improve ourselves as human beings.
