About the Author
Chris Bailey, a graduate of Carleton University in Ottawa, wrote over 216,000 words on the subject of productivity on his blog, A Year of Productivity, during a yearlong productivity project where he conducted intensive research, as well as dozens of productivity experiments on himself to discover how to become as productive as possible. NEWSFLASH: Busyness and Productivity are not the same thing

Heard about this book on one of Tai Lopez's videos, and it is put together very well. You can read this book start to finish, or skim through (as I did) to find what is applicable to you. Even better, each section has a "Estimated Read Time" at the beginning so that you can gauge how long the chapter will take you, or if you only have a few minutes, you can skip to a chapter that matches your time.

For me, the biggest take aways were the Rule of 3 (in which you organize your life to have 3 things on your To-Do list), brain dumping (where you right down all the thoughts that you have at that moment and reference later), and the Collection Box (which is similar to the Brain Dump, except you jot thoughts as they come to you while you're working on a task). I use the "Collection Box" at work to focus more, and I find that it has helped bit by bit in exercising my attention muscle. I also made a note to turn off all notifications during work, so that I don't get distracted by the buzzing and pings on the lock screen.

I've only been practicing the techniques for a couple of weeks, so interested to see how this turns out over the year!

Full a great ideas and insight

This is the second book I've read about productivity since I started using Todoist, the tasks management program. Bailey's book gave me a few really useful strategies and goals for improving my task management strategy. As a result reading this book, I've moved about a dozen of my maintenance tasks over to Monday mornings, which is my least productive day of the week. I am also going to experiment with not drinking coffee for 30 days and see how it affects my daily energy level.

This book would be very useful as the a college course, because just reading it without following through on some of the suggestions will not make it very useful.

I definitely suggest highlighting the book and trying out many of the recommendations he suggests at the end of each chapter. I also recommend keeping a reflective journal about your productivity, and write about what's working and not working with your task management strategy. This book provides lots of different ways to think about your strategy, as well as experiments you could try to improve your productivity.

Easy read with good info

I wasn't really sure if I would like this book as I've read a lot of productivity books and he is 20 years younger than me. But I was curious to see what he learned during his year of productivity. I was surprised to find it to be an easy, informative and entertaining read. He provides easy exercises to incorporate what he learned into your life. I didn't expect to find any earth shattering new info (which I didn't) but I loved how he structured it around the ideas of utilizing time, energy, and attention, a concept I'm not sure I've seen before. I also appreciate how much research he did in his project. The book overall was a great review for me and I would definitely recommend it.

Adorable! The only thing I didn't realize was it ...

Adorable! The only thing I didn't realize was it was a picture book, thought it would have a small story but it doesn't. But it's ok, it's still super cute and can't wait to have my husband go through it with out son.

Gentle Xeno-humor a winner!

How could you possibly not love this little picture book? It is cute, clever, and touching, and gives you a very unlikely affection for a giant bug that wants to put something awful in your chest! I am so glad I picked it up, because I think if you are a fan of the Alien series, or even just H.R. Giger's art, this is a great addition to any collection. I found it instantly endearing, and I especially liked the way the artist paid tribute to the great man whose mind birthed the creature into our culture and our dreams. Far from ridicule, this is a gentle and, at times, even sweet collection of funny little what-ifs involving Jonesy the cat, shopping, and trying to make it as a normal monster in a busy, fast paced world. I really loved this book, and it didn't bother me in the slightest that there are no words. It doesn't need them!

A very cute PICTURE book

This book is very funny and a fun gift for those who love the "Alien" films in your life (this was a Christmas present for my younger brother). I bought this and was very satisfied with it, however it doesn't get the full 5 stars because it is just a straight up picture book. I was under the impression that these pictures (which are all printed nicely and very very funny) would have some funny captions to them but they do not. Overall, a funny and unique present, just know that it is solely a picture book with no writing at all.

Very Useful for Anyone Starting A Business

As of the writing of this review (August 2011), the US economy is still in pretty bad shape, banks aren't lending and companies are sitting on piles of cash. It's a perfect time to launch a startup, but capital is scarce. Fortunately, there are options for aspiring entrepreneurs. The Lean Startup by Eric Ries (co-founder of internet company IMVU) is a great place to begin.

When I first received the book I was a little concerned that it would be more focused on brick and mortar businesses to the exclusion of internet and content type startups. However, Ries focuses on a variety of entrepreneurial situations from traditional, physical businesses to those only existent on the web. If you are operating a business or thinking about starting one, chances are Ries has addressed your situation in some capacity within the book's 290+ pages.

The Lean Startup is filled with technical information, but also interesting stories that back up the author's assertions. I like this model because it allowed me to see what he was talking about in a real world setting. I also appreciate his inclusive vision of entrepreneurship. For example, he thinks entrepreneur should be a job category in larger companies and goes on to address the needs of people who are in charge of starting new projects within big corporations.

In short, the lean startup model focuses on getting a minimum viable product to the market, then receiving customer feedback along the way to improve the product and pivot (take a new approach) if necessary. This, of course, is in contrast to the old way of doing business where a product is launched fully functional backed by extensive market research. This method can be successful, but it costs a lot of money, pivoting is difficult, and failure can harm the bottom line (think Microsoft Vista).

I'm starting my own business and found The Lean Startup incredibly helpful. It basically functions as a general "how to" book for the lean startup method. While everything wasn't equally helpful for me personally, his advice on minimum viable product, how to find the root of personnel failures, and the creation of meaningful metrics is priceless.

If you are starting a business or thinking about expanding one, I'd highly recommend this book. I know my business will be more successful because of it.

read steve blank's blogs or books instead of this crap

I've been reading Steve Blank's blogs on lean startups and product strategy since he started. Read his "The Four Steps to the Epiphany: Successful Strategies for Products that Win" or his "The Startup Owner's Manual: The Step-By-Step Guide for Building a Great Companyl" if you must read a book on this subject.

His work and mentoring apparently inspired Eric Ries to write this book, which is fine but he does a really bad job of representing the original concepts. Makes me wonder how much of them he really understood.

Apart from being overly verbal and having a lot of repetitive waste in the narrative he's also constantly promoting himself and/or his fantastic consultancy efforts for others. Up to the point of nausea for me. Entire book could probably be condensed in less than a 100 pages if his ego was removed.

Read the original work, leave this alone.

However the concepts Eric Ries tries to describe in this book are very valid and real! It is mostly Steve Blank that applied them to startups and the Toyota lean authors that originally created them. If you managed to finish this book and found the content interesting please, please, please read up on it. There is lots of material out there and this book is definitely not a sparkling gem of wisdom on this subject.

The author has only 1 point, it is a waste of time to read the whole book

No need to waste your time on 350 pages while the author has one point repeated over and over: test your assumptions with a minimum viable product as early as possible instead of waiting to develop the "perfect" product that you have in your mind.

My training as a physician included many hours of nutrition, but fiber was only mentioned in regards to the effects of a deficiency. Never once did any of my professors consider the possibility that too much of what has always been considered a good thing' could have such harmful or far-reaching consequences. The author's detailed description of the trauma imposed to the gastrointestinal mucosa by the expanding fiber is a vivid reminder that returning to the basics of GI function and logically thinking through what our bodies actually are designed to do with the food we eat, should be the first step on anyone's journey to recovery from digestive disorders. Thanks to the insights in this book I have slowly begun to change my approach to common patient symptoms, which I traditionally would have treated by suggesting increased fiber and more water to correct! Saved my life

Have had diverticulitis for 10 years now. Have listed to the Doctors who said , increase fiber.....more water...Never has any doctor told me I was peeing away essential vitamins . Never told to take probiotics to replace the gut flora damaged by all the antibiotics I was given.....I just was admitted to the hospital and had 5 days of high dose antibiotics........At this time I found this book "Fiber Menace" to read......I am sooooo angry at the lack of info the Doctors gave me and immediately wanted to do surgery.
I said no because I felt doing gut surgery when you have a leak into the gastric cavity while so infected is stupid and asking to become septic. It has been two weeks on my new low fiber way of life...I now go three times a day without pushing at all. Any greens I eat now are juiced to a fine drink......I feel great. Am also doing the probiotics with the magnesium and potassium . This is the first time in 10 years I have not used stool softners, enemas, laxatives to just go to the bathroom......I am a happy happy camper.
Thanks for making the book easy to read so that anyone can understand gut sense.....

Turns conventional fiber-wisdom on its head - and he might be right

If you are like me, you have heard all the buzz about how important and healthy fiber is for your diet. Doctors and Nutritionists and Health researchers and every other commercial on TV tell us that we just can't get enough fiber in our diet, and we should get more to be healthier.
Seems like almost everyone agrees. Seems like no one questions this advice. Seems like everyone has been reading and hearing and seeing the same 'facts', and assumes this advice to be gospel.
Turns out that this may not be true, if this author is correct in his contrarian, independent research. I call him "the crazy Russian", since he seems to be the only person I have ever run across who shows research (his own, plus other's) that turns this idea on its head.
I call him "crazy", since he seems to be a voice in the wilderness, and at first his claims that fiber is always healthy, and can in fact be bad for your health, depending upon what, when, and how you use different kinds of fiber. Can he possibly be right, and everyone else wrong. He must be crazy. Wrong.
I am a retired research scientist, and although I am not a health expert, I can follow his claims, research, and logic, and honestly feel that he is probably right. Namely, the unquestioned conventional wisdom about 'you can't get enough fiber' is wrong and dangerous. There are many kinds of fiber, and you must choose the right kind, use the right amount, and in the right way, if you want to stay healthy.
He does a nice job of explaining this, and how 'conventional wisdom facts' have been improperly researched and verified over decades.
He explains how he thinks is the proper fibers to use, and why, and the proper ways to use it, for best health benefit.
I for one think the author is correct, and conventional health industry practice has been wrong all these years. So read what he says, and decide for yourself - it may change your health for the better. It is at the least worth thinking about and trying.

Must-read for Everyone!

This is an extremely useful book. Whether you suffer from any digestive ailment or not, I believe this to be a must-read for everyone.

I had suffered from constipation for years. Eating more fiber as according to “conventional wisdom” only led to more flatulence, more discomfort and even harder, larger stool that refused to budge. Such “advice” caused even more harm, pain and emotional stress than ever. It took me a long time to finally come to the conclusion that insoluble fiber was making things worse, and that I should stop stuffing myself with whole grain, flower seeds and especially, never again, bran.

This book offers a lot of research results and gives readers genuine and feasible guidelines to reverse the damages that fiber has already done to the body, or in the case of healthy readers, help prevent digestive disorders.

Even if you are not interested in the researches, the step-by-step guides to restoring flora in your guts really work. I now have toilet habits that are more or less regular, and most importantly, 100% painless and effortless.

An angry, long-winded tirade

Shahrazad Ali, controversial author of such books as "The Blackman's Guide to Understanding the Blackwoman" and "How Not to Eat Pork (Or Life without the Pig)," offers us this supposed survival guide for Black people living in the USA. Using her Nation of Islam-influenced beliefs, the author quizzes the reader about how one lives in the USA. The book is presented in the form of a multiple-choice test, and one's score, from answering the various questions about history, lifestyle, and culture, determines whether the reader is living as a slave. Unfortunately, this book is laughable at best.

Ms. Ali provides no evidence whatsoever to back up her claims. She presents her material as fact--without a single bit of research--and yet she drops the names of such classical Afrocentric thinkers as Molefi Kete Asante and Cheikh Anta Diop. Do not confuse Ali's anger with scholarship. The Nation of Islam and other Black nationalist organizations must not be mistaken for Afrocentricity, a legitimate philosophical discipline.

Furthermore, while Ms. Ali attempts to be universal with her beliefs, it is evident that this form of writing is a most American phenomenon, in both flavor and presentation. If you are interested in classical Afrocentric philosophy and scholarship, there are many books available, including those of the authors mentioned above, that will satisfy your curiostity.

Don't Waste Your Time!

This book continues Sharazad Ali's sad tradition of whacked out, mean spirited pseudoscience and pseudohistory that appeals only to extremely bitter and half educated African-American social rejects looking for an outlet for their misdirected anger.
Essentially, the book is a series of quizzes that imply that any Black American who has any positive encounter with Whites are still slaves. One particularly outrageous Q&A states that any Black person who laughes at a White man's joke is still a slave (so does this mean that I belong in the cotton patch for laughing at Jakcie Gleason and the Honeymooners)?
A good subtitle of this book (as well as Sharazad's other epics of nonsense) should be "The Miseducation of a Negro" (with apologies to Carter G. Woodson).

Not detailed enough, too abrupt ending

The story started out interesting enough to grab my attention. But as the story progressed details of lives were left either unsaid or partially finished. Key points were glaringly absent such as what happened to Alec's mother as a result of her jealousy and malice. Also, the story came to a very abrupt end. No resolution as far as the Grant Clan finding out about what Alec's mother did to their clan daughter. What happened when the child was born, so Edward was a boy, big deal, what happened after that?????? Would have been a better read had these details been addressed! Hopefully the next book is better thought out and ended properly.

Action and romance

The story line is good. A lot of action, but the author is very repetitive in her wording, there are more words than unceremoniously in the English language. The characters are genuine but they need more depth. And when you dispose of a character simply saying that so and so turned their wrath on this person who is a main player in the story isn't enough. Sorry no spoilers. But again I adored the plot and love authors who write about strong women!

Where is the conversations?

65 percent into the book and I have mix feelings. Wife just said she loved her husband and I find completely stupid and unbelievable. They had sex one time and that was the most time they spent together. First day at her new home she thinks he doesn't want her sitting with him at the dinner table and not sharing his bedroom with him. The next day he leaves without saying good bye and she doesn't see him for three months. The have never had a conversation longer than 3 mins and when he comes back he ignores her and goes with his mother without one single word. So how in the world am I to believe she is in love with him. They have spent less than a week together and he has not done one thing to fall in love with. Sex doesn't equal love,especially if it was first first time and its in the middle of the Forrest.

It was very disappointing. There are more pages in this book the words spoken between the couple who are so much in love. That to me was a joke. At least 90 percent of this book was what was going on in people's mind.

I rate it a two overall because it wasn't the worst I have read. I will read one more book before I give up on the author completely. I do not think it is worth the money.

Do not purchase the Kindle version!

There is not much to say about the quality of this sociology classic. This is obviously a very important book, that shaped sociological thinking as we know it today. It is very well written, and is a must-read for any student of sociology, and perhaps even social sciences at large.

Yet, my negative review is specifically aimed at the Kindle version of this book: whoever made the adaptation of this book to version had done a very poor job! The paragraphs break at random points, sometimes in the middle of a sentence; some words are misspelled, with periods replacing one or several letters, leaving the reader guessing what the original word was; and most importantly - the tables are completely illegible. I don't know if it is a problem with the scan, but on my Kindle paperwhite it was impossible to decipher the words and numbers and make sense of the quoted data in basically all of the tables in the book.
This is highly disappointing, especially as this version seems to be made and sold by Amazon itself. I hope they will fix it soon, and update the version for all kindle users who already purchased this book.

As a person with an undergraduate degree in sociology and a Ph.D. in sociology, I am VERY familiar with Durkheim's SUICIDE. I, of course, have a hard copy of the book.

The problem with the hard copy is it lacks an index. For me, I really need an index for my current research. As a result, I purchased a Kindle edition of this classic research study. It's GREAT. I use the word search on my e-edition and use my hard copy to search the pages around my word search. Believe it or not, it has been a great time saver.

Great book!

At first I thought this book would be dry like every other math book, but when I actually sat down and read it, I realized it was far from boring. You can read each chapter individually; you don't have to read the bool left cover to right. If math was taught in high school with this book, kids may find it more interesting and, dare I say, relevant.

I will admit this book explains what CBT is quite well. But its not going to stop me losing my rag or going nutty in queues. The book is just a lot of large print with lots of empty white spaces and questionnaires you need to fill out and silly games you need to play.

Overall a waste of money and even worse a waste of time to read

Draper does it again!

As we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. today, let's stop for a minute and applaud the valiant writers, like Sharon Draper, who write with honesty and authenticity for children and young adults. I had the amazing opportunity to speak with Draper while I was a graduate student at Clemson University. She was real, straightforward, and humble. That's what I've always seen in her writing. From Copper Sun to The Jericho Trilogy, Draper knows what young readers want, and she delivers on every level.

In Stella by Starlight, Draper puts us right in the middle of the action as 11-year-old Stella and her brother JoJo see the KKK gathering in the North Carolina woods at night. Burning a cross, Stella and JoJo quickly become fearful at the realization of what is happening and run to tell their parents. For the African American siblings, living in the South carries dangers on every corner. Walking down the street, as Stella recounts, is harrowing journey, one that once came with being slapped by a Caucasian man.

Stella is intelligent and quick witted, though she struggles a little bit with getting her thoughts on paper. At the time when schools were segregated, Stella constantly questions her plight and wonders how different the white schools could be. She loves her classmates and her teacher, but the thought of always being inferior, or less valuable, hangs in the back of her mind. A trip to the candy store shows both compassion from the female, white store owner and inequality from the white kids who enter the store for candy. She simultaneously feels respected and disrespected in just a few moments.

Draper paints both a hopeful portrait of Stella's warm heart and desire to be something more than label and a despairing picture of a town fearful of every move and whispered word. Age appropriate, Draper proves once again that she knows how to depict real situations with a finesse that comes only with experience, wisdom, and compassion.

Outstanding, Realistic, Historical Fiction in the Segregated South

STELLA BY STARLIGHT by Sharon M. Draper provides a realistic portrayal of life in the segregated South during the Great Depression.

The author skillfully conveys the reality of life in a world where people are treated unfairly because of the color of their skin. From a random beating to a house burning, the scenes that demonstrate the terror instilled by members of the KKK are chilling. Through her use of age-appropriate examples, Draper is able to create convincing scenarios that convey both the injustice as well as the courage needed to survive in this period of intolerance and fear.

Many readers will empathized with Stella’s desire to be a writer as well as her difficulty in translating her thoughts into words on paper. Her use of the donated typewriter to write news article may inspire some budding authors.

Aimed at the middle grades, this outstanding work of historical fiction should be added to your school library’s growing collection of quality works dealing with African American life in the 20th century.

Like the works of Christopher Paul Curtis and Jacqueline Woodson, Draper is able to draw on both African American culture as well as universal human themes. This combination makes it a great book for literature circles, social studies, and language arts activities.

The year is just beginning, but put STELLA BY STARLIGHT on your Coretta Scott King Book Award short-list for 2015.

Maci and Zoe's Review: A great book club book

After reading the whole book, I can definitely recommend this. It has so much meaning in every word and even after you finish it, you continue to discover more depth and meaning in every part. This book is not only about what it was like to be colored in North Carolina with the KKK starting up. It was about standing up for what is right, and also discovering yourself. This book has a lot of great lessons about even if you do not think you are good at something, you are and all it takes to get better is practice. This book also is what it means to be a writer. I thought that it was very cool and this book inspired me to write more too. I gave this book four stars because it was really good and had a lot of meaning, but it was a little young for me, another thing is, it was a narrative. Things happened and they were followed up, but there was no real conclusion to the book, everything just continued on and it was just that you the reader stopped looking in, but there was no miraculous change or anything, we were just finished looking in. Overall I would recommend this as a book club book because it has so much symbolism that would be lots of fun to discuss.
