About the Author

Alfred S. Posamentier is Professor of Mathematics Education and Dean of the School of Education of The City College of the City University of New York. He is the author and co-author of many mathematics books for teachers and secondary school students.�

After completing his A.B. degree in mathematics at Hunter College of the City University of New York, he took a position as a teacher of mathematics at Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx (New York), where he focused his attention on the teaching process in general and the improvement of students' problem-solving skills in particular. He developed the school's first mathematics teams and established a special class whose primary focus was enrichment topics in mathematics and problem solving. After six years as a high school teacher, Dr. Posamentier joined the faculty of The City College where he also received his master’s degree. He began to develop in-service courses for secondary school mathematics teachers, focusing on practical classroom applications of educational research. These courses addressed such topics as the uses of new technology in mathematics instruction, efficient ways to teach weaker students, problem-solving strategies, and the enrichment of mathematics through a variety of ways including, but not limited to, recreational mathematics.

Dr. Beverly Smith is an associate professor and the Mathematics Education Program Director at the City College of New York.� Believing that quality mathematics teachers must first have a deep knowledge of mathematics they teach and love for the discipline, she has worked to support new teachers as they prepare to teach in some of our countries most diverse school systems. Throughout her career, Dr. Smith has been a tireless champion of equity in education. Her early college teaching experience involved working under a federally funded Special Services grant to create a developmental mathematics program designed to support at-risk inner-city students as they transitioned to college. While working toward her doctoral degree, she accepted a position at the State University of New York at Potsdam in the School of Education and worked with the Great Lake Collaborative to develop an integrated mathematics, science, and technology program for diverse K–12 schools from the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation all the way to the larger Syracuse City Schools.

Good but vague

Overall I found this book to be well written, informative, and practical. The main text covers the same information as general education courses but applies it to the mathematics classroom. My only complaint with the text is that it proposes solutions to problems or situations and then says that the teacher must decide what is best for the class. Yes, every class is different and the teacher knows the needs of the students better than an author, but while reading the book, I felt that the authors didn't want to committ to deciding what the best practice would be.

The appendix of enrichment plans is the reason I am not reselling the book. It includes so many activities to try with all levels of math students that I feel the price of the book might well be justified.

Teaching Secondary Mathematics: Techniques and Enrichment Units (8th Edition)

For my math pedagogy classes we use this Posamentier's Teaching Secondary Math and Van de Walle's Elementary and Middle School Math. I like Posamentier's much more. I could imagine the ideas of this book applied to honors math classes and the math oriented high schools. Posamentier uses a lot of Geometry examples in this book and they seem very useful for teaching geometry. I think there are a lot of challenging problems that are good for high school students: Erastothene's measuring the circumference of the earth, Gauss' arithmetic series. exploring triangle medians with Geometer, Birthday Probability Problem. Posamentier also uses the Graphing Calculator a lot with this book- model train distance problem, medication, compound interest. And yes, solutions and how to set up the problem on the Graphing Calculator are given. I don't remember, but I think Posamentier does include a fair amount of problems on how to use Excel to math problems like simple interest and probability.

Posamentier also provides math examples for motivating students: Tell a story, present a challenge, show the sequential knowledge, show a gap in student understanding. I feel that Posamentier knows his stuff, his tone in writing is concise and to the point.

The book doesn't include it, but I would like to have seen how Posamentier would exactly teach a high school math lesson.
Once again, there is a lot of geometry material presented in this book. I would have liked to have seen more trigonometry, there is a lack of examples on how to teach trig. I respect Posamentier, and I'm happy to have learned from his book.

A compliation of ideas in list format with only several good explanations

The book is a compilation of ideas and lists about effective teaching. I was unimpressed by some of the explanations by the author. He seems to be a little out of touch with what the curriculum and behavior management looks like in lower-income neighborhood schools. Easy reading because the book doesn't have much effective teaching inovation. I will not purchase another one of his books.

The impossibly glamorous life of the beloved revolutionary martyr Che Guevara is extolled but not illuminated in this glitzy hagiography. The authors sketch the outlines of Guevara's tumultuous life-his youthful motorcycle journeys among Latin America's downtrodden masses, his rise as Fidel Castro's co-comandante, his incongruous stint as Cuba's Minister of Industry and Central Bank chief, his return to guerilla adventures in disastrous forays to the Congo and Bolivia (where he was executed)-but tell the story mostly through interviews with Guevara's comrades and snippets of his writings. The book is dominated by hundreds of photos of Guevara, usually in beret and fatigues, which ably convey the smoldering charisma-"he was very masculine, with beautiful eyes," pants one compa�era-that has made him the universal symbol of left-wing defiance on posters, T-shirts and murals throughout the world. Unfortunately, the book's devotional tone does little to establish Guevara as a serious political figure. Readers learn of his chess skills and his kindness to lepers, but next to nothing about the organization of the Cuban Revolution. Guevara's quixotic economic policies are largely glossed over with photos of him harvesting sugar cane to promote his scheme of replacing wages with "voluntary work" and "moral incentives." The excerpts of his own writings, which are studded with bad poetry ("In the mouth of the finale, you can hear valor fly") and grand self-encomiums ("The only passion which guides me is for the truth"), betray nothing more reflective than an idealized faith in the people and an enthusiasm for armed struggle. End sheets provide a time line of highlights in his life from birth in 1928 to the 1997 transfer of his remains to Santa Clara, Cuba. More than 100 of the subject's quotations are sprinkled throughout, providing Che's opinions on such topics as truth, moral incentives, love, and youth. Previously unpublished interviews with the subject's friends and political allies provide some depth. The interview with Albert Ganado, motorcycle travel companion of his youth, gives a glimpse into Che the friend. Interviews with Colonel Alberto Castellanos and Colonel Oscar Fernandez Mel give pictures of the Cuban revolutionary. The interview with Ulises Estrado Lescaille covers the era of the man as international freedom fighter. The last chapter, "Legend," includes many paintings, posters, and even products, including cigarettes, wine, tote bags, and the ubiquitous T-shirts. The man who said "The people's heroes cannot be separated from the people, cannot be elevated onto a pedestal, into something alien to the lives of that people…" is ironically very much an icon on a pedestal. Little information but lots of pics

Little information for people that think the world of Che. However there are a couple interesting interviews with people that knew him and fought with him. Plus there are lots of pics that are published for the first time! I give it 4 stars because I would of loved more interviews and information. However the pics were appreciated :)

Lots of photos

This book is a photo album of the very photogenic Che Guevara. It has some information beside the photos, and also a few interviews with people close to Che, but the main point of this book is to present the photos. This book has many photos, of Che in his youth, family life, and during his travels. It also has images of Che as an icon with examples of International art work showing how recognisable his face is even today.
The entire book is 430 pages long with photos on every page, but is small in size.
If you are looking for a detailed informative book into Che's life, then this is not the book for you. However, if you want a quick simple read of his life as told in photos, then you could spend hours pouring over this and will not be disappointed.

Influence through Storytelling

As the title indicates, this is a book about the power of storytelling as an influencing tool. As Annette best tells it: "People don't want more information. They are up to their eyeball in information. They want faith...Faith needs a story to sustain it - a meaningful story that inspires belief in you and renews hope that your ideas indeed offer what you promise...Story is your path to creating faith. Telling a meaningful story means inspiring your listeners...to reach the same conclusions you have reached and decide for themselves to believe what you say and do what you want them to do. People value their own conclusions more highly than yours. They will only have faith in a story that has become real for them personally. Once people make your story, their story, you have tapped into the powerful force of faith. Future influence will require very little follow-up energy from you and may even expand as people recall and retell your story to others."

The author then goes to summarize what the remainder of the book is about: "The rest of this book is dedicated to proving to you the things you already know about storytelling and filling in whatever gaps might be missing. Storytelling is not rocket science. It is very easy and incredibly rewarding to practice."

A very enlightening, practical and applicable book - no matter what it is that you do in life. You will find inspiration and learn numerous techniques to improve your storytelling abilities and consequently your influence. Highly recommended read!

2- "Other methods of influence - persuasion, bribery, or charismatic appeals - are push strategies. Story is a pull strategy. If your story is good enough, people - of their own free will - come to the conclusion they can trust and the message you bring."

3- "People need story to organize their thoughts and make sense of things. In fact, anyone you attempt to influence already has a story...If you tell them a story that makes better sense to them you can reframe the way they organize their thoughts, the meanings they draw, and thus the actions they take."

4- "Policy can't adapt, but a story can give guidance, make sense, and without ruling on either side of an unresolvable conflict, invite someone to think through her own creative solution to a tough problem."

5- "A good story helps you influence the interpretation people give to facts. Facts aren't influential until they mean something to someone. A story delivers a context so that your facts slide into new slots in your listener's brains."

6- "However, if you tell sustaining, guiding stories like this one, people will feel empowered to stop asking you for answers and to think for themselves. An answer only gives them a fish, whereas a story teaches them how to fish for themselves."

7- "Influence is a function of grabbing attention, connecting to what they already feel is important, and linking that feeling to whatever you want them to see, do,or feel. It is easier to let your story land first, and then draw the circle of meaning/connection around it using what you see and hear in the responses of your listeners. Influencing is a real-time activity."

8- "Traditional models of influence are linear and focus on power that is first gained, then exercised, and in the end either reinforced or list. Story favors a circular model of power where influence is passed back and forth and where beginning are endings and endings are beginnings."

9- "A wonderful way to find influential stories is to review the personal experiences that brought you to the place where you now want to influence others."

10- "True influence changes behavior without relying on constant reminders. Any agreement that depends on policing future behavior is not addressing some force or dynamic still working against your desired goal."

11- "No builder would start building without first understanding the foundations of the terrain. Neither would a successful influencer build a new story without first understanding the old stories. Influence will require either a new foundation that can coexist with the old stories or excavation and removal of the old outdated stories."

12- "Storytelling tracks vital deviations that inspire growth - meaningful personal experiences, creative solutions to conflict, and paradoxial truths."

13- "After all, organizational values form behavior. Stories about your values in action create and sustain the organizational culture (for better or for worse). When you live the vision and values you profess, you need only tell people what happened last week or last moth. If you aren't living your vision and values daily, well, you can't dress a pig in a ball gown and expect people to call her princess. Story telling operates as a litmus test of accountability that simultaneously inspires and reminds us to stay true to our values."

Top 10!

I will put this on my list of top ten books on personal development. A how-to book on influencing others that begins with self-reflection and the integrity required to project authenticity and believability. This book is very well done, and I see how it earned its spot in the "100 Best Business Books of All Time."

Much like Michael Jeffreys (who wrote Success Secrets of the Motivational Superstars: America's Greatest Speakers Reveal Their Secrets) Annette Simmons is not a fan of technique. That is to say, she believes that only basic goodness, honesty, and strong character can produce influence. This book is not exactly a how-to book in the sense that it directs the reader on specific tips for becoming a better storyteller, but rather, encourages a new way of thinking - which is thinking non-linearly, from multiple perspectives, and away from facts.

As author Annette Simmons notes, "People don't want more information. They are up to their eyeballs in information. They want faith--faith in you, your goals, your success, in the story you tell."

Stories get past the rational, critical mind and mines deep down into our emotions at an unconscious level. A good story induces a state of trance whereby the critical conscious mind becomes engaged in the narrative, allowing the moral/meaning of the story to sink into the unconscious unchallenged. It then influences their perception, thoughts, feelings and behavior.

I've had friends tell me they think storytelling is a strength of mine. After reading The Story Factor, I hope they are right. I know what I have to do to improve, anyway... and that is always a good thing.

Be More Effective at Persuasion

If you've ever wondered why you have a hard time getting others to see your point of view, you may be using too many facts and not enough relevant stories. Annette Simmons explains why giving more facts will not only turn people off, but can hurt your chances for ever being able to influence them.

I had a major insight on page 50 when I read, "A subtle yet powerful shift occurs when you seek to influence people to make wise decisions rather than `right' decisions. When you decide to awaken sleeping wisdom rather than convince others you are right, you will produce a much more powerful experience for both of you."

Most of us have a cause we're concerned about and would like to see a better world for people, animals or the environment. Annette shares stories throughout the book that will get you thinking about personal stories you can share that will make a difference. When people are faced with too many facts and information (which most of us are) they'll become confused and cling to status quo. A story helps them draw out their inner wisdom and connect with Truth.

Whether it's to one person or many, if you're trying to influence the unwilling, unconcerned or unmotivated, the information in this book will help you achieve it with less effort and better results.

Solving your solder-reflow problems!

This excellent book on reflow soldering, by noted expert Doctor Ning-Cheng Lee, offers a unique approach that will be invaluable to anyone concerned with practical applications of microelectronics packaging.
Many books, including this one, tell you how reflow soldering should work. Dr. Lee's book goes beyond those basics, to tell you in great detail what most other books do not long dwell upon: what to do when reflow soldering does not work as expected. How to identify the problems. How to cure or compensate for problems to achieve good solder reflow interconnections. How to use the defects themselves to eliminate defects and to optimize your solder reflow process.
The first four chapters are a clear and complete exposition of reflow soldering and of surface mount assembly processes. They cover surface mount technology in general, solders and solder pastes, and the beginning-to-end steps in surface mount assembly. Nourishment for the technical mind ranges from the organic chemistry of fluxes to equations relating surface tension and solder spread. These four chapters provide an excellent summary of how reflow soldering is supposed to work.
The next seven chapters place a strong focus on trouble-shooting. Not on how things go when all is well, but on what things can go wrong, and how to fix, to compensate for, or to work around them when they do go wrong. The logical structure is clear: three chapters on reflow problems, titled "Before Reflow," "During Reflow," and "After Reflow." Three chapters on the special techniques and the potential problems encountered in solder bumping area array packages, in assembling and reworking BGA & CSP packages, and in reflowing solder-bumped flip chips. Each chapter first covers the required materials and processes, and then details all of the potential problems that might be encountered, and how best to solve them.
The capstone chapter describes how to optimize a reflow process through the proper analysis of the defect mechanisms encountered. This chapter requires 39 sub-sections to systematically step through identifying, analyzing, and correcting defects. It turns defect analysis into a powerful tool for optimizing the reflow process. Further discussion extends this optimization approach to other alloys and systems, and suggests that your creativity might carry it still further.
The final chapter is a now-obligatory look at the "lead-free" juggernaut bearing down on the industry, with some recognition that this juggernaut carries its own baggage of potential problems.

The Practical Science of Reflow Soldering

Few people have made more contributions to reflow soldering than Dr. Lee has. He has been a driving force in taking surface mount technology (SMT) from an art to a science. This book is a compilation of these successes with ample references to the important work of others. Those who work in this field will find this book indispensable in setting up and optimizing SMT assembly processes. In my opinion Dr. Lee's book is unequal in its value to practitioners in SMT.

Excellent Resource for SMT process

I wish I could have gotten this book earlier. It explains and demonstrates all of the known possible defects I have ever encountered in my professional years and their respective causes and solutions. I would recommend it to not only the SMT process engineers but all electronic engineers who need to make PCBAs.

Basic ''Absolutely Fun'' French!!!

First off, I'm a really big, self-confessed Practice Makes Perfect series fan. And it's no surprise that I snaffled Basic French by Eliane Kurbegov when I had laid my eyes on it.

I'm an intermediate-level learner of French and so I must confess, in all humility, though, that I did ask my self the question: do I need this book at all? Or Why do I think that I'm compelled to or must own a copy of this book? One brief ''look inside'' glance through the book revealed the potential it held; the magic it contained within itself; all the fun that was waiting to be unleashed!!!

I had already with me other titles from the same series by the self same author: she is absolutely (I guess this is the most appropriate epithet to describe her or her approach) FUN!!!

In this day and age, language learning can mean so very many things to both the learner and the author/publisher, ranging from great demand; fierce competition; a bewildering welter of choices as regards books; ''swoonworthy'' prices/costs; a desperate need to an intellectual luxury.

Now given this scenario, how would you, as a learner, make your choice? Can a book have within it the best of ''all the worlds''?: good content; adequate material; high quality; ample scope for practice; attractiveness- in terms of both presentation and treatment of the subject; empathy- on the part of the author (because not every language learner can afford to or will have the time to take classes, mind you)- and this property is of paramount importance, especially if you are like me- a ''home student'', as it were; and last but equally importantly, FUN!!

Yes, language learning is, and should be, chiefly about having fun, for if you don't have fun learning a language, as with any productive activity, there is little meaning in doing it in the first place. And only a well qualified, experienced and remarkably gifted teacher like Eliane Kurbegov knows this gospel truth. And the fact that she completely understands this truth shines through her books, more so in ''Basic French''.

So, well, harking back to the question I told you about that I'd posed myself: why indeed did I want to buy this book? The answer is three-fold:

1 I love McGraw-Hill's Practice Makes Perfect books like mad!!!

2 I totally adore and admire Eliane Kurbegov's teaching skills and approach.

3 If the truth be told, it would have been a personal affront not to buy this or any book from the series and, more seriously, I found, essentially, a two-pronged benefit I could get from this book: you can use it as a companion book to a fully-fledged beginner's French course book or you could even (this, I believe, you will find most rewarding)use it as an exceedingly profitable revision/review book.

The layout is incredibly clear and beautiful. Vast expanses of space to make notes or write in your annotations are an added feature, delightfully typical of all Practice Makes Perfect books.

Best of all, each chapter is ''bite-sized'', and will not take more than half an hour's worth of your sitting down to it. The trick is having just the right amount of ''warm-uppers'', as I call them- text introducing grammar concepts of the subject in that chapter. Quickly, though not always, followed by vocabulary lists. These too act as ''warm-uppers''. What's really fun is solving the exercises- with loads of contextual vocab, old and new words (from previous chapters as well), generously provided general knowledge stuff which is up-to-the-minute (everything ranging from Hollywood and French superstars to world celebrity leaders in the fields of sport, politics and what have you?!!) and loads of idiomatic expressions which seamlessly meld into the context.

I always look at each chapter/session as a course-meal. Now for ''the dessert'' is something which really takes the...well...la cr�me br�l�e!!- ''faits divers''= fun facts. These help you read and learn about everything under the sun: from the origins of ancient world literature, history of everyday things, facts about cartoons, fairy tales, cinema, etc- again, ample fodder of general knowledge with a cherry on the top: reading comprehension and this, of course, means once again new words, expressions and vocab. And what's more, the book is extremely affordable. All in all, a delectable square meal!!

So there you go, I've laid at all on the table. Personally, you'll do really very well to get yourself a copy of this utterly fantastic book. And you'll have McGraw-Hill, Eliane Kurbegov and yourself to thank for it.

Practical and comprehensive

I like the chapter layout of this book and how it really teaches the very basic vocab and grammar etc. My only complaint is that there is no pronunciation guide! I speak Spanish and need extra help to ensure that I'm not transposing the Spanish accent on a French word! Maybe an audio CD would be most effective for this anyway, but a guide would still be helpful since I'm a visual learner. Otherwise it's a great book! I had my friend who has a master's degree in Linguistics look through the book and she also felt that it was quite comprehensive.

if you want to learn the basics of French through writing - especially if you have some knowledge already - this is perhaps the best $13 you can spend.

Bite-sized lessons, simple and straightforward presentation, answer key in the back, affordable and very helpful.

Grab this and a simple dictionary and hit the books!

(note: I recommend starting with this "Basic French", not the other books in the series, e.g. "Basic French Grammar", as this is a nice mix of grammar, vocab, etc., and is at the "basic" level so makes a great starting point / refresher.)

The Bloom is Off the Prose

Those of us who have bathed in the dazzling light of Bloom's exegeses of the Shakespeare plays will find on display in this volume a more obscure side of the great critic. The reader encounters here an earlier edition of Bloom, one who now expresses himself in sometimes tortuous prose and unwieldy language, now bludgeons rather than dissects. This Bloom has not yet gained his sure footing in the sparse, pithy prose of his more recent works which reveal him to be a master interpreter. Still, there is much here to admire; for Bloom shows us Steven's pedigree with marvelous clarity. Beginning with Emerson and proceeding to Whitman, Dickinson, Harte and others, Bloom illuminates Steven's debt to the rich provender on which he drew. (My own acquaintance with Emerson had languished since high school , but I soon found myself reading Emerson's superb essay on Shakespeare and Whitman's Leaves of Grass with a new eye.) Bloom shows how 'the American religion', an atheistic blending of respect for individual rights, power, will, and fate found their firm expression in Emerson and travelled onward to inform the poetry which followed, especially Stevens'. Bloom shows us how the tropes of fate, death, mother, and the sea wind through the years as each poet in turn struggles to express a uniquely American sense of meaning. True enough, Bloom fiddles too much with the technical bits, but he gives us a place from which to view Stevens' work so that we can now grasp why, as Bloom says, he was the greatest American poet of the 20th century- and perhaps of any century. Such favorites as The Auroras of Autumn, The Man with the Blue Guitar, The Emperor of Ice Cream and a score of others shine for us in a new light. Best of all, the reader carries with him the secret knowledge that despite these early slips,Bloom's brilliance will only grow.

The agony and ecstasy of reading.

I check 3 stars because, forced to check something, there's no 2.5, and thought I should tilt upward, considering what poet we're talking about. Very learned book on Stevens, too learned I think, anyway so much so a layman like me should probably keep his mouth shut, but the pleasure and melancholy in reading Stevens' poems, how obsessed one can get reading them, the daunting level from which he speaks, his language and measure like a god's, and the difficulty is rewarded many times over, for one learns a little more, feels a little more, inches up to each poem a little more, at each rereading, which explains at least in part why we're expending the energy in writing and reading books about them, for his poems, especially in this case Sunday Morning, are the products of a truly great, epochal poet, that belongs in the canon more assuredly than most.

But Mr. Bloom, you speak as though you're having late coffee and oranges in a sunny chair, while I in darkness cry out, please help me, how can I keep reading your book when I read something like this on the very poem in question: "... I think it not accidental that Sunday Morning, with all its Wordsworthian, Keatsian, and even repressedly Whitmanian touches, should be Stevens' most Tennysonian poem..." You think it not "accidental"? Help! I think I'm drowning! Anxiety of influence? My God, someone throw me a life line! Do I have expend 2 lifetimes devoted to careful study on all these other poets before I can even make a hairline crack in the seal that holds back Stevens? Perhaps I do. Farewell then, I'm going under, there's nothing more for me here in this life, someone notify my children, for I thought I could read Stevens, but now I wonder if I can even walk down the street!

Bloom shows Stevens a fit member of the post-Whitman/Emerson tradition

Harold Bloom is probably my favorite critic, and Stevens one of the only 20th century poets in English I can bear to read without becoming hopelessly bored by the belatedness of the work. Bloom's book here is a close reading of the standard shorter and longer works of Stevens, and in so doing, Bloom shows how Steven's language and metaphor place him in the line of such Romantic poets as Keats, SHelly, and then of course, and most importantly, Whitman and Emerson. Emerson of course wrote rather weak poetry but his conception of the poet and his call for an American bard remain so strong today that very few poets/writers have the cognitive strength to deal with him. Most American writers fall back into the trope of nostalgia and flight (courtesy of Brockdon Brown); Stevens wrestled with this too, but his work ultimately stands in the orphic tradition of American poetry founded by Emerson, and whose strongest exemplars are of course Whitman and probably the Pan-American Pablo Neruda.

My only criticism of this book is that a) it does not address the great late poem "Sail of Ulysses," which is one of the most Emersonian poems in Steven's canon; further, b), Bloom's tone in this book, as compared with most of his others about the Romantic tradition, is not quite so strident. Some don't like Bloom at when he is strident, but I love his work the more he sounds like a high-toned Christian preacher in his Emersonian pulpit. However, it may be that Bloom is unable to rise to such heights in this book because, as great as Stevens is, he never truly defeated his agon with Emerson and Whitman; he never truly overcame his belatedness. Stevens came very near to doing so in his best work, but I am sorry to say that I think Stevens remains an ephebe to Emerson and Whitman. That is not to reduce his achievement; very few poets are able to defeat their precursors. Stevens is a canonical poet without a doubt; however, when I then open Whitman or Neruda, I see that his voice is indeed quite a bit weaker than theirs. The little old lady from Des Moines will then say, "yes sir of course, but whose voices could ever be as strong as theirs?!" And I would say to her then hallelujah madame!
