About the Author
William J. Duiker is liberal arts Professor Emeritus of East Asian studies at The Pennsylvania State University. A former U.S. diplomat with service in Taiwan, South Vietnam, and Washington, D.C., he received his doctorate in Far Eastern history from Georgetown University in 1968, where his dissertation dealt with the Chinese educator and reformer Cai Yuanpei. At Penn State, he has written extensively on the history of Vietnam and modern China, including the highly acclaimed COMMUNIST ROAD TO POWER IN VIETNAM (revised edition, Westview Press, 1996), which was selected for a Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award in 1982--1983 and 1996-1997. Other recent books are CHINA AND VIETNAM: THE ROOTS OF CONFLICT (Berkeley, 1987), U.S. CONTAINMENT POLICY AND THE CONFLICT IN INDOCHINA (Stanford, 1995), SACRED WAR: NATIONALISM AND REVOLUTION IN A DIVIDED VIETNAM (McGraw-Hill, 1995), and HO CHI MINH (Hyperion, 2000), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2001. While his research specialization is in the field of nationalism and Asian revolutions, his intellectual interests are considerably more diverse. He has traveled widely and has taught courses on the history of communism and non-Western civilizations at Penn State, where he was awarded a Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the spring of 1996. In 2002, the College of Liberal Arts honored him with an Emeritus Distinction Award.

Jackson J. Spielvogel is associate professor Emeritus of history at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as "Moreana," "Journal of General Education," "Catholic Historical Review," "Archiv f�r Reformationsgeschichte," and "American Historical Review." He also has contributed chapters or articles to "The Social History of Reformation," THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, "Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies," and "Utopian Studies." His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (Seventh Edition, 2013). He is the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (Ninth Edition, 2015). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988--1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

A decent textbook

A decent textbook that won't break the bank. The spine is solid and the pages have a decent font size that is easy to read. Chapters appear longer than they are due to the maps and the size of the text. Take heart: A college professor could force you to read a more difficult and/or more expensive book.

FANTASTIC TEXTBOOK!

This book is written in a very engaging manner by a pair who clearly love history and know what they're talking about. They cover the most important material, with quite a bit of detail, but it's not overwhelming. The book is well laid out visually, making it easy to read. The source material they include is fascinating. This is the best world history textbook I've found. I would recommend it to students from high school through college, or to anyone wanting to learn history for pleasure.

The Only Indian Cookbook You'll Need

I have made about a dozen recipes so far and every one of them has earned my own and my friend's and family's rave reviews. Yes, the recipes are exacting and particular and require an entirely new array of spices and much time spent preparing pastes, spice blends. They also demand lots of marinating. infusing, blending, chopping, and braising but what a payoff. The complex and subtle flavor and texture cannot be had any other way. If you enjoy the pleasures of working in a fragrant kitchen and adore Indian cuisine this is the only Indian cookbook you will ever need to purchase. I came across this book when I took Mr Iyer's Craftsy online class and tried his rice dish. When the platter of fragrant vegetarian rice disappeared within minutes of cooling from oven heat, I tried the next and the next recipes, ones I would not usually find interesting - and not a single flop among them. Fabulous vegetarian recipes as well as meat and any & all side dishes.
A nice bonus is that Iyer often includes a short description of the history or some other anecdote about the dish - truly a labor of delicious love.

Fantastic!

This is an intimidating cookbook just because of the sheer size. Once you determine what you want and pick a recipe, the book becomes a lot less mystifying. Iyer has dozens of hints and shortcuts designed for people who don't have unlimited time and access to Indian markets.

I made the saag paneer. I made my own paneer and it was so easy it's shocking. The bad part is that I've made it 3 times and can't stop eating the stuff. The recipe used two different types of garam masala and tells you how to make both.

Very nicely written and easy to understand.

Probably two of the best things I've ever made at home

At first I was intimidated by the size of the book and the enormous variety. I finally took it off the shelf and selected a chicken curry to try and then picked a recipe for a cauliflower curry as well since i had some on hand. Wow. Probably two of the best things I've ever made at home. I had the two dishes with a nan from the local indian grocery and was very satisfied. i like the way he is precise about identifying the result you want... "until the edges of the onions are brown and the pepper is starting to turn black" or ... " until it starts to stick then add water" ... practical points i can watch for in the cooking of it. Recommended.

Once again it pays to be nice to small, ugly man in a forest

"The Nose Tree" is adapted from an old German story by Warwick Hutton, who also does the watercolor illustrations for this book. The story is about three soldiers, returning home from a hard fought war and experiencing lots of bad luck. However, one night in the woods while each takes a turn watching over their campfire, a small ugly man approaches. Each allows the little man to come and share their fire, and to each the little man gives a magical gift. One receives a cloak that makes every wish come true, another a purse that is always full of gold, and the third a horn that summons a great army.
While the story has a lot of the traditional elements of a folktale, such as being kind to strange looking folks because they are almost always magical, there are a few twists. For example, if you visit a castle you expect there to be a king, who has a daughter, who is not yet married. But few readers would expect the princess to turn out to be a witch, which is just one of the strange elements that pops up in this story. Actually the princess ends up being the villain of the piece, but even a greedy witch of a princess is no match for a small, ugly man who knows about the Nose Tree.
This is an interesting little tale with its little twists and turns. About the Author
Roberta Radley is the Co-Chair of the Ear Training Department at Berklee College Of Music, where she has been on the faculty since 1976. She is also a professional jazz vocalist, pianist and arranger. She has authored two online courses through berkleemusic.com, an instructional ear training DVD, and co-authored Berklee College Ear Training Department's Core Ear Training textbooks.

fun and educational!

This book focuses on learning to hear harmonic progressions. You should first know how to read music and probably already have some basic ear training--enough to transcribe a simple melody. A semester of music theory, for example, should be plenty.

There's no magic bullet here; this is just a guide to the necessary hours of practice. But the framework she provides is clear and sensible. The text is well-written, and the book's well laid out and easy to use. The accompanying audio examples are also high quality.

Also, she suggests recordings to use as practice material, and gathers the suggestions into a discography at the end. The choices are well thought-out: they stand up to repeated listening; they're at appropriate levels of difficulty; they're mostly easy to find, and many will be familiar (which helps give the feeling of learning names for things you've heard before).

I've made it about halfway through, and I'm having fun and learning a lot. Highly recommended.

You'll also want a notebook with some manuscript paper, some comfortable headphones, an instrument to try stuff on, and access to a good music library (I've been using Google's subscription service plus CD's for occasional exceptions (mainly Beatles songs)). This isn't something to read passively. It would also be better with a teacher or at least some fellow students to work with, but I'm finding it useful enough on my own.

Excellent

This is a very practical book, both clear and detailed. It starts simply, but then covers a lot of ground. There are always plenty of examples of the points taught with a list of tracks to listen to, so that everything feels relevant and never simply academic. As another reviewer said, you'll get as much out of this book as you are prepared to put in. You could spend a lot of time on each lesson and continue to improve. If you take it seriously, your aural abilities will definitely improve in some way.

I like this book so much, my only regret is that I bought the kindle version, downloading the music free from the publishers. While I can enlarge the print, musical notation remains small and faint, quite difficult to read. I'd recommend getting a hard copy.

Not Real Easy, but Really Really Helpful

This book has a lot crammed into it. Radley is a master at teaching this difficult subject. She provides a clear step-by-step approach that involves listening exercises and examples from popular music. The audio examples are well done. They are easy to hear and involve a variety of instrument sounds.

Radley teaches this course at berkleemusic.com. It has been the best course I have taken anywhere in any subject in any academic setting. The course follows the topics in the book. If you can take the course, it's well worth it, and be prepared to work hard. If you can't take the course, then enjoy this excellent book. The more active you are about doing the exercises, the more you'll get out of it.

Good language usage!

I enjoy the books that feature talking during the sex scenes. With this author, you're not going to get sweet romantic words, you're going to get rough, filthy, derogatory, name-calling. If that's something you enjoy, this is an excellent book. The ending threw me off. It wasn't a horrible ending, the scene was well described and well written, it just made me cock my head a bit. Overall this is real good book. Enjoy!

Many of the essays considered the primacy and limitation of education vs. interpretation, and questioned whether these were the same or closely related practices, and which was most relevant to museums now? Other essays concentrated on the efficacy of labels, the role of language, and the usefulness of object-centered approaches. Still other essays examined audience, and asked who is it in museums that is in responsible for interpretation?
