It works for me

I found this to be very useful and unlike most self-help books it was actually helpful.

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is basically a form of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
and has quite a lot of evidence attesting to its efficacy.

Essentially this workbook shows you how to deal with emotional problems and then how to actually change your behaviour and thinking.

It is very practical and a step by step approach is provided in this book, though you don't have to follow it rigidly.

It does require quite a lot of work and the book can be a bit dry at times.
However the approach does make sense and you are not asked to take everything on trust but to actively deal with any doubts that you may have.

It is quite a large book and there are various worksheets that you can photocopy.
The author does have another book "Be your own CBT therapist that covers a lot of similar ground but is quite a lot cheaper than this book.

It has been around six months since I have purchased this and I have found it to be immensely useful. Most other self-help books seem to give me a little bit of positivity but then are quickly forgotten. But I am still using REBT and it has greatly lessened my procrastination and shyness as well as reduced some of my other problems.

It is not miraculous but I have found it to be genuinely helpful.

Great book for therapists, their clients, and anyone who wants to make changes in their lives

I use this book with my clients a lot, and it's something they can do on their own. I do distance counseling, so we generally don't go through the workbook together. My clients work on it and then review with me what they're learning and how helpful they think it is, and we talk about what they're getting out of it. Every client to whom I've recommended the book so far has found it helpful. People who want to make changes in their lives without going to therapy will find this an excellent resource as well, and it's very user-friendly.

The JFC/Swing classes offer a powerful way to build user interfaces in Java, and this richness comes with a lot more complexity. Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell provides the documentation needed for understanding the most important features of Swing and serves as a handy reference to every package, class, and method.

The book is especially good at introducing the essential elements of Swing compared to the older AWT standard. Early chapters compare the fundamentals of AWT and Swing, including the architecture of each, plus the new possibilities for user interfaces offered by today's Swing. Standout sections on Java2D graphics (which is a lot more complicated than AWT graphics), printing, and Swing's advanced UI capabilities round out the tour here. Short examples and clear explanations, somewhat dryly written, provide a starting point for learning Swing.

The heart of this book is its 500 pages of reference material for every Java Swing (and AWT) package, class, and method. Some readers may quibble with the ordering here. (For instance, the model classes for advanced UI components like JTables are separated from the components themselves). But this reference has a good sense of visual clarity (with alternate lines of text highlighted with gray so that you can find what you need quickly). There are also some nice graphics, showing the relationship of Swing classes to one another.

Great reference tool...

This title is meant to be the second volume of a three volume set that covers the entire language. Volume one covers the basic core Java APIs, while volume three covers the enterprise classes.
Like all "In A Nutshell" books, this isn't probably where you want to start if you are trying to learn the language. Part 1 is set up such that topics are introduced and discussed with code examples, but it is not a "hand-holding" type of explanation. It assumes you are at least familiar with the information at a high-level, and understand the basic core Java fundamentals. If you are at that point, you should be able to learn a lot from the first section.

Part 2 is where an experienced Java GUI programmer will live and breath. There is detailed documentation on each of the classes that are covered, as well as a diagram that shows the class hierarchy within the class, and where the class fits into the overall Java class hierarchy. Once again, it's strictly documentation with no explanation. Don't expect the author to explain how each method in the class works. It's up to you to figure out how the method best integrates into your project.
I can pose the same question I did when I reviewed Java In A Nutshell... Why get this book if I have the online API documentation from Sun? I see them as complimentary. You can probably find much of the reference material in either source. Some will prefer the online hyperlink navigation, while others will appreciate having all the information on a subject in four or five pages that can be thumbed through. I know when I'm stuck on a problem I want both sources!
For Notes/Domino 5 developers, I would say that there is little in this book that would be of value to you as you code a typical Notes/Domino application. While Notes/Domino does support applets within the application, you would most likely code those outside of the Notes/Domino framework. If you are tasked with developing a Java application that uses Notes/Domino APIs to capture some of the inherent power of the platform, then this book would be useful as you develop the GUI interface that you'll need for your project.
Conclusion
If you're a Java developer working with client-side applications, get this book. If you're a Notes/Domino developer looking to use Java in your applications, you should probably focus on the Java In A Nutshell book. This is a very well written book, but the usefulness of the information depends on what type of Java programming you are doing.

Really Spills the Guts of AWT and Swing FAST!

This book jumps into the GUI libraries really fast, so I would recommend reading a beginner's book beforehand, this one can be confusing. This book would be a great secondary book after reading an introductory one on AWT and Swing libraries.

Complete Reference but no Tutorial

The book "Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell" contains an introduction to the Java Foundation Classes and a complete reference to them.
The major part of the text (~550 pages) is the reference to the Foundation Classes and lists all of the JFC classes with their class hierarchy structure information, all methods and a brief description of the class. This reference part has the same quality as the references known from the other Java in a Nutshell publications (Java in a Nutshell, Java Enterprise in a Nutshell). It is comprehensive, gives a good overview of each package and lists the class methods in a very readable way. The introduction to packages and classes are brief but cover the essentials very well.
The first ~150 pages of this book give an overview of the Swing architecture and an introduction to the key APIs in the JFC. It covers graphics, printing, data transfer and applets. This part of the book is more problematic than the actual reference part. The selection of topics is limited and not very intuitive (why a hole section on Applets?). Although this introduction is written very well, the it is too short to serve as a tutorial and yet too literary and incomplete to be part of reference manual.
Anyhow, this is a good and complete reference manual that comes handy whenever you don't have access to the online Java API documentation.

About the Author
Scott Flint, a 5th degree Black Belt, holds the title of Master Instructor, has taught over 4000 students during 31 years and has learned from experience exactly what women, men, and children must know to be safe in all environments. Scott is also Senior Chief Instructor of West-Wind Kung-Fu Schools in California. He is Director of the Taipei Chinese Kung-Fu Association United States Of America Branch. Besides traditional Kung-Fu, Scott teaches a course in Personal Protection using the Combat Pistol.

A book with good solid and valid advice to keep you and your family safe from the predators in the world.

I have been a lifetime student of numerous martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Kenjutsu, Hanbo-Jitsu etc.) studying various combative systems. I am always looking for new material related to the martial arts and self-defense. I recently picked up this (Waking the Tiger within: How to be safe from crime by Scott Flint) interesting and informative book at a bargain price on Amazon.

I found this 136 soft cover book very appealing because the philosophy presented by the author when it comes to safety and self-defense matches my own street combat principles which I have often wrote about in my many books and manuals. The ten chapters cover the following topics: The right to defend yourself is explored in chapter one and the author pulls no punches in his view on this issue. Basically, this means to never look for trouble but if you are forced to defend yourself you MUST become ruthless and vicious as a tiger. The second chapter deals with the most important factor in protecting yourself which is awareness. With our dumb phone society 90 % of the people walk around with their noses in their phones and are easy pickings for a dirt bag. Chapter three is about recognizing and developing the natural tiger within you. The fourth chapter explains the “stop button” theory which is essential for defending yourself on the street. The fifth chapter gives advice on home defense. Group attacks are covered in chapter six. Chapter seven tells how to make travel safer. Chapter eight and nine explores children issues and dealing with bullies. The final chapter covers dealing with terrorists in our modern society.

If you are seeking an excellent and concise book with to the point practical and realistic advice on safety and pure self-defense, this book is for you.

Read it, learn from it, and keep yourself safe!

I have mixed feelings regarding "Waking the Tiger Within: How to Be Safe From Crime" by Scott Flint. I want to give it 5 stars for attitude. I like the message Flint teaches regarding how important it is to fight back and not be a victim. I like that he wants to waken the "Tiger Within" and help people not be victims and to find the inner-strength to fight back. However, some of the advice in the text seemed too "matter of fact" and simplistic with a message that was too "absolute" when the the area of self-defense and being safe from crime has so many variables and situations that really depend on so many factors. So for some of the parts of the book, I really only wanted to give the book 3 stars for this absolute-matter-of-factness that ignored variables that are also important. I opted for a 4 star review because I really do like that Flint is trying to get people to stand up for themselves and defend themselves and not be victims. Also, as someone who also teaches people to be safe and defend themselves, I appreciate the work Flint is doing.

"Waking The Tiger Within" is a short book with ten chapters. It can be read in its entirety pretty quickly. Flint starts with a chapter that declares "no one ever has the right to hurt you." I agree, and this is the kind of attitude that I liked in the book. The section on the law was weak, but then Flint is not an attorney. The second chapter was on awareness, the key to self-defense, and Flint teaches the same awareness color code that Colonel Jeff Cooper taught, and so many of us continue to use today. Good chapter because everyone needs to be more aware. Chapter three on the tiger focused on fear and emotions. Not a bad introduction to these concepts and they are important. The fourth chapter is called the stop button and Flint teaches to be a "head hunter" and some basic self-defense techniques that include going for the eyes (stop buttons). This is where the book was a little too "absolute" for me, and I don't personally think the first technique I'd teach a young girl to do to a larger man is a reverse punch with closed fist to the attacker's nose as shown in the pictures. (Yes, I understand Flint also taught going for the eyes, but these pictures did not help his book as "reality self-defense."

Chapter Five had a few tips and suggestions for home defense. Since there are entire books on this topic, it is difficult to get much into 17 pages. But it is a start, and any information and more importantly, any action you take to make your home safer is a good thing. The sixth chapter focuses on group attacks and contained a couple of tips in the four pages. Chapter seven, again provided a few tips and suggestions, this time on traveling safe.

Chapter eight is on growing up prepared and the main lesson that Flint repeats often is to ensure your kids never talk to strangers, period. Some of the stuff in this chapter will be difficult to get across to some kids, depending on their age. Additionally, one must remember, if a young child has to get physical with an adult, it is not as easy as the movies portray for the child to overcome and get lose. Yes, I believe kids should learn to fight back, but remember, if it gets to that point, it may be too late. The awareness and avoidance are so much more important.

Chapter nine is on bullies. Flint, as expected from the rest of this book, teaches that kids should stand up to bullies and fight if needed right from the start. While this may go against many school policies, I have to admit it is how I handled bullies successfully when younger. He also insists that parents make a big deal out of bullying right away at schools and ensure it stops and help keep your kids safe. I have to agree, it is important to stop this kind of behavior right away. Some may not agree with the way Flint advises to handle things, but it sure beats the negative consequences of bullying that we way too often read about.

The final chapter is on terrorists and basically Flint says with the information already learned in the book, you will be better prepared to deal with terrorist threats. He then concludes with a few final thoughts.

Overall, this book is a worthwhile read for those interested in preparing to defend themselves. Flint makes some points a bit differently than some other authors on the subject, and it is always good to learn from various sources. Additionally, Flint teaches the attitude of not being a victim, and that is important. Read it, learn from it, and keep yourself safe!

Good addition to the subject

Author Scott Flint has done a nice job with Waking the Tiger Within. It's basic and it's simple, which is exactly what self-defense should be. This is true whether you're facing a dangerous person in the proverbial dark alley, protecting yourself from a carjacker or protecting your kids from the many predators that lurk about these days.

Flint's writing style is uncomplicated, again exactly as it should be.

Waking the Tiger contains a couple of chapters that go beyond what most books on this subject offer: helping kids deal with bullies and learning how to be safe from terrorism. I should say that these two chapters are quite brief and therefore barely scratch the subjects, but they will get the reader to think about them and hopefully research further.

O. C. Zienkiewicz was one of the early pioneers of the finite element method and is internationally recognized as a leading figure in its development and wide-ranging application. He was awarded numerous honorary degrees, medals and awards over his career, including the Royal Medal of the Royal Society and Commander of the British Empire (CBE). He was a founding author of The Finite Element Method books and developed them through six editions over 40 years up to his death in 2009. R. L. Taylor is Emeritus Professor of Engineering and Professor in the Graduate School, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. D. good, but needs more explanation

This long-awaited text in Spanish has helped me to teach my GED students, even though explanation, as in all current GED texts, is a bit thin. The questions, probably reflecting the test itself, are sometimes intricate and somewhat tricky, unnecessarily so, in my opinion. All in all, it's still probably the best book out there in Spanish. It may deserve a higher rating, but I find the whole approach of the GED exam too convoluted. I don't understand why the GED test has to be so difficult that most high school graduates could not pass it, but student materials need to amplify their explanations in order to help these students who truly deserve a helping hand.

Save your money, whoever translated this book into English did a very poor job. Its very hard to read and written from the viewpoint of a Tito fan (he did this he did that) I gave up after reading 30% of the digital book.

Das zeigt sich am deutlichsten darin, wie der englische Staat mit ImmigrantInnen umgeht. Das Thema der Migration war f�r mich, aufgrund meiner Erfahrungen in �sterreich, besonders interessant. Z.B.: die kulturellen Unterschiede in �sterreich, in der T�rkei oder in anderen L�ndern.
Dieser Film ist ein menschliches Drama, es wird gezeigt wie sich die Probleme dieser Welt auf einzelne Individuen auswirken. Ich finde diese Darstellung sehr spannend, weshalb ich mich darauf freue diesen Film genauer zu bearbeiten.
