The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon, by Brad Stone

The definitive story of Amazon.com, one of the most successful companies in the world, and of its driven, brilliant founder, Jeff Bezos.

Amazon.com started off delivering books through the mail. But its visionary founder, Jeff Bezos, wasn't content with being a bookseller. He wanted Amazon to become the everything store, offering limitless selection and seductive convenience at disruptively low prices. To do so, he developed a corporate culture of relentless ambition and secrecy that's never been cracked. Until now. Brad Stone enjoyed unprecedented access to current and former Amazon employees and Bezos family members, giving readers the first in-depth, fly-on-the-wall account of life at Amazon. Compared to tech's other elite innovators--Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg--Bezos is a private man. But he stands out for his restless pursuit of new markets, leading Amazon into risky new ventures like the Kindle and cloud computing, and transforming retail in the same way Henry Ford revolutionized manufacturing.

THE EVERYTHING STORE will be the revealing, definitive biography of the company that placed one of the first and largest bets on the Internet and forever changed the way we shop and read.

Like Steven Levy's "In the Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives," and "Gates: How Microsoft's Mogul Reinvented an Industry -- and Made Himself the Richest Man in America" by Stephen Manes and Paul Andrews, it is the definitive account of how a tech icon came to life." -- Seattle Times

I did like this book
By S. Kaphan
I wasn't really planning on reviewing this book, because I was mentioned in it several times and it didn't seem appropriate. But several other people who were also mentioned in the book have already posted reviews, and in fact, MacKenzie Bezos, in her well known 1-star review, suggested that other "characters" might "step out of books" and "speak for themselves".

I was at Amazon for the first 5 years of its existence, so I also have firsthand experience of those times at the company, and I have been a fairly close observer since I left. By and large I found Mr. Stone's treatment of that which I know firsthand to be accurate -- at least as accurate as it is possible to be at this great a remove, and with no contemporaneous documentation of the early chaotic days or access to certain of the principals. Relying on people's memories of nearly twenty-year-old events is of necessity somewhat perilous. Of course there are a few minor errors here and there, but I don't have firsthand knowledge of important mistakes much less anything that appears to be intentionally misleading. But there are a few minor glitches. In my case, I can testify that I did not, in fact, have a bushy beard at age 17 when I worked at the Whole Earth Truck Store & Catalog in Menlo Park. It was a publisher and seller of books and other things, not a lending library. It was in a storefront and was no longer a mobile service operating out of a truck by the time I worked there (p. 32). But I do not think this is a reason to disregard the entire book; it's just some not terribly relevant detail the author got a bit wrong in a way that doesn't change the story materially. MacKenzie listed one error, which didn't seem especially awful or material to me, and then referred only vaguely to "way too many inaccuracies". Without a more explicit list of mistakes it is hard to know what to make of that. Breaking news: a new 372 page book has some errors!

Since Mr. Stone did not have access to Jeff Bezos for this book, but had to rely on previous interviews and the accounts of others, it would be surprising if there weren't a few mistakes regarding his thought processes. As part of my agreement to be interviewed for this book, I was allowed to read a draft of the chapter which covered the time I was there, and I offered a number of corrections, some of which Mr. Stone was able to verify and incorporate. To the extent I am quoted, my quotes are, while not complete, fair and in context. I don't love or agree with everything that Mr. Stone wrote about me -- especially his broader conclusions regarding the circumstances of my departure from the company -- but I do think it was fair and reasonable. I am aware of at least one other interviewee who was also given a chance to check over the chapter in which his story was discussed. I obviously can't know this, but I suspect that if Mr. Stone had been granted access to Jeff Bezos, that he would have extended a similar courtesy. I have a pretty high degree of confidence that Mr. Stone made a significant effort, and did what was in his power, to make the book accurate.

The irony is, of course, that by reviewing the book as MacKenzie Bezos did, she has brought an immense amount more attention to it -- there are dozens of articles referring to her review via Google News this morning -- and its sales rank has shot up considerably. The book is not a fawning hagiography, but it is also hardly a completely negative account either. It describes not only Amazon's ultra-hardball business practices, but the better aspects of their services and products as well. To the extent of my knowledge it is a pretty realistic account, though necessarily incomplete. Of course Mr. Stone has his own point of view, and of course he does what nearly all biographers do, which is to impute thoughts and emotions to the people he writes about. It would be mighty dull reading without that, but I think readers are generally smart enough to understand that when they read biographies, especially unauthorized biographies, the author has to recreate some kind of persona to make the subject appear life-like. That doesn't make it fiction. This was written as a business book for a popular audience anyway, not as an academic treatise, so expecting every "Bezos thought..." to be footnoted, or couched in hypothetical language, is not realistic.

Especially in comparison to the sad collection of awful books that have been written on this subject, this one is much more detailed, more interesting, and a lot more deeply reported. Sure, there is plenty more that could be written about, and maybe someday somebody will. If and when that happens, I can only hope it is also "unauthorized" and not sanitized by a corporate PR department, and that some real investigative journalism is done, like Mr. Stone did here.

Interesting, surface-level read about the complexity and mindset behind Amazon
By Kevin
As somebody who has been familiar with Amazon since they began (tech in Seattle is a small world), Amazon has always been in my peripherals so I was already somewhat familiar with Amazon's stigma, especially in this city, as well as what a lot of people have had to say about Amazon. This book only really scratches the surface of the mindset of Jeff and his executive team throughout the course of Amazon's history, but if you can take an objective viewpoint and read between the lines of the book you can get a pretty revealing idea of how Amazon operates and their philosophy behind a lot of what they do. There is a lot to get out of this book that other things are severely lacking (looking at you, New York Times).

Like other people have mentioned, this book paints Jeff in a little bit of a strange light, only focusing on his ruthless approach to business and e-commerce and spending little time talking about the fact that he is indeed human and has a wide range of emotions and isn't actually Darth Vader incarnate.

All in all, I enjoyed the book thoroughly. The pacing is quick, but not thin, and the author spends just enough time explaining situations to provide context without risking crafting a dense editorial. The language is smart, but not aloof, and the progression of the writing makes it easy to continue reading for long stretches of time unlike a lot of other books like this one.

Amazing and intreresting story!
By Majestechs
I am an undergrad student at the University of Baltimore. This book was recommended by my Entreprenureship 300 professor.
I don't consider myself as a serious book reader but I really enjoyed reading this book. I have always been interested in Amazon as a company and I've been a loyal customer for several years. It has been motivating watching the company grow into a very successful business. This book tells the fascinating story of Amazon and how it got where it is now. The book is very helpful to those that may interested in starting their own business.

Brad Jones explains how Jeff Bezos used his tenacity, dedication, and harshness to build an empire. Even when things seemed to be going horribly wrong, Bezos managed to stay positive and still come up with innovative ideas that would propel Amazon into strong and even sometimes brutal empire. Brad Jones explains how similar Bezos' demeanor is to other extremely successful entreprenuers such as Bill Gates and others.

I learned a lot about what it takes to build and run a successful company. Jones gives many details about the background operations of the company throughout the years. Even when the company appeared to be successful to outsiders, the company was actually struggling financially. However, Bezos' new ideas that most company executives wouldn't take think to try, were the main reasons that Amazon survived the Dot Com Crash and recession. To this day, Bezos is still developing new ideas and using them to sore beyond all expectations and continue following his dream of making Amazon "The Everything Store".

Beware!

Dangerous secrets lie between the pages of this book.

OK, I warned you. But if you think I'll give anything away, or tell you that this is the sequel to my first literary endeavor, The Name of This Book is Secret, you're wrong.

I'm not going to remind you of how we last left our heroes, Cass and Max-Ernest, as they awaited intiation into the mysterious Terces Society, or the ongoing fight against the evil Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. I certainly won't be telling you about how the kids stumble upon the Museum of Magic, where they finally meet the amazing Pietro!

Oh, blast! I've done it again. Well, at least I didn't tell you about the missing Sound Prism, the nefarious Lord Pharaoh, or the mysterious creature born in a bottle over 500 years ago, the key to the biggest secret of all.

I really can't help myself, now can I? Let's face it - if you're reading this, it's too late.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4–6—This stand-alone sequel to The Name of This Book Is Secret (Little, Brown, 2007) combines mystery, adventure, and fantasy. On their mission for the Terces Society, 11-year-old Cass and Max-Ernest must find the homunculus, a 500-year-old man born in a bottle, before Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais do. The evil duo plans to use him to uncover the secret of immortality. The use of an overbearing narrator to create a sense of danger works in the beginning, but grows tiresome toward the end. The numerous parenthetical comments and footnotes are often laugh-out-loud funny, but also draw readers out of the action. Bosch creates sufficiently quirky, well-rounded protagonists, while stereotypes suffice for the secondary characters, with the exception of the homunculus. Cynical humor shines through in the portrayal of the Skelton Sisters, an evil tween pop group in the employ of Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. The dark illustrations, descending chapter numbers, and playful fonts will catch readers' attention. Fans of Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" (HarperCollins) will enjoy this slightly more fleshed-out read.—Kim Ventrella, Ralph Ellison Library, Oklahoma City, OK

From Booklist
The adventures of aspiring magician Max-Ernest and survivalist-in-training Cass continue. As with The Name of This Book Is Secret (2007), the author often intrudes on the story to offer dire warnings to the reader that even reading this tale is too dangerous to consider, presumably because of a world-shatteringly nefarious secret and the evil machinations of the two young adventurers’ archnemeses, Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. It’s a clever ploy that adds a level of heightened drama to the tale, which, underneath all the trappings, has some neat elements (a “Sound Prism,” a cantankerous homunculus) but lacks many true thrills. There are still codes for Max-Ernest and Cass to unravel and secret societies to infiltrate, but the injection of a third main cast member reeks of the old sitcom ploy of throwing in a hip new character in an attempt to make a show fresh. Chapter-opening illustrations add a lighthearted touch to this solid sequel, which is more character-driven than the first, and will hit or miss depending on what readers like more, the people or the puzzles. Grades 4-7. --Ian Chipman

This is a fun book with an interesting narrative. Cass and Max-Ernest are young adults who have recently been involved with a secret society, the details of which are located in the previous book in the series. Although you do miss out on some details of the protagonists, you could read this book without having read the previous installment, THE NAME OF THIS BOOK IS SECRET.

When you read IF YOU'RE READING THIS, IT'S TOO LATE, it is as though you are being told a story by the campfire.

The characters are well-developed, easy to relate to, and have a good sense of humor. Because of the short chapters and common footnotes, I see this as a great book for a reluctant reader. It is easy to pick up where you left off and it takes you down many paths at once, keeping you interested. The footnotes typically add a humorous aspect to an interesting mystery, allowing the reader to venture in a new direction before continuing on with the story.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It had a strong storyline with characters that took risks and maintained and created friendships.

Ok so read to the end of IYRTITL and you'll get it. I agree with the other reviewer who liked PB's interview with PB at the back of the book. That was hilarity worthy of...I don't know, someone hilarious! PB, I guess... These books remind me of the Benedict Society series except I think PB's are funnier and weirder... even though I like them both.

So yes, PB, go ahead and give yourself 5 stars...though I know you would, at the very least, anyways! And I hope there is a book 3.

Kyle Wadsworth arrives on the Harvard Campus only to discover, much to his surprise, he's magical. Thus begins his four-year journey to learn where he fits in the world, which ultimately becomes a quest for true love.

Upon arrival at Veritas, Kyle quickly joins a group of peers who become involved in solving the mystery of a seductive siren in the library, while they learn about the magic inside themselves and around them, as well as the secret history of magic and those who practice it.

Kyle's trials and tribulations range from his need to meet the bisexuality prerequisite before he can study sex magic to the fact that the ancient prophecy he translates for his thesis project seems to be about himself. If Kyle is right, he'll need to find his true love, or the world as we know it is doomed.

“The Siren and the Sword is contemporary urban fantasy with lots of hot sex, or maybe it's contemporary urban sex with lots of hot fantasy, or maybe...hmmm. I don't know, actually. I guess I'll have to read it again to decide. And again. And again.”

—Steven Brust, author of the Vlad Taltos series

“I hope anyone who enjoys a great ongoing mystery imbued with fantasy, erotica, love and drama opts to read this and the rest of the books in the Magic University series.”

—Sara Winters; Dirty Mind at Work

“Kyle's journey of self-discovery is in some ways a familiar one. A young man finds freedom in college, finds abilities he did not know he had, and finds someone he likes, maybe even loves. The magic adds a level of spice to Kyle's journey. ... There are many very sensual scenes in the story, with a final scene that is a climax in a lot of interesting ways. The Magic University series looks like it's going to be a fun ride with lots of ... eroticism. The Siren and the Sword is a delicious start.”

—Paranormal Romance Reviews

“This is a grown up, sexy and fun story. Ms. Tan has done an outstanding job of feeding my Harry Potter obsession in a very adult fashion. I look forward to reading her other books in this series.”

—Book Wenches

“Joining Kyle as he experienced many rites of passage, both ordinary and magical, was a delight. It was such a treat to escape to Veritas. Count me in for the whole series, it’s just that good.”

—Manic Readers Reviews

“This freshman novel to the Magic University series is very well written and, although promoted as an erotica, this tale is considerably deeper than your average erotic novel.”

A Tale of Erotic Magic that will singe your fingertips!
By Emmaleigh
I'm a massive fan of the paranormal and anything involving fantasy and couldn't wait to get my hands on this book!

I spent the weekend reading The Siren and the Sword, Magic University Book One, the latest by award-winning erotic romance author Cecilia Tan. I wasn't disappointed, swept in by the delightful dedication Ms. Tan penned into this marvelous book... for all the grown-ups out there who believe in magic.

Proudly, I will count myself among that select group!

The Siren and the Sword is Cecilia Tan's delightful follow-up to the critically-acclaimed novels, MIND GAMES and THE HOT STREAK, combining magic with the erotic in the theme of a "wizard's school." THE SIREN AND THE SWORD is the first of a planned five-book series entitled Magic University, all to debut in ebook form from Ravenous Romance.Having once stood of the grounds of such historical colleges as William and Mary and Harvard, for anyone with imagination, there are those question that tempt the mind. Blame it on the Potter novels, but images of a possible world, more adult and profound, begin to unwind.

Is it possible that there a world that can only be visible to the select few? Are there chosen ones in the world that can see what others overlook? Do the non-gifted walk past portals to the other side, without realizing their existence?

Ms. Tan has written a deliciously wicked and erotic tale that answers those questions. I enjoyed every word Ms. Tan had penned to the page, the magical touches of her story dropping me into the midst of a delightful fantasy world filled with mystery and intrigue.

When Ms. Tan's character of Kyle first enters the hallowed grounds of Harvard, nervous and as anxious as only a first time student could ever be, he stumbles upon such a world. The secret and magical university of Veritas is revealed to him, puzzling the administrators and himself. Immediately, he becomes immersed in an intriguing world filled with magic and beauty, especially at the sensually delightful hands of Jess Torralva.

The Siren and the Sword tale leaps from the page in erotic, steam filled drama that is guaranteed to singe your fingertips! A wonderful group of friends, magic that flies from page to page, the novel is a delightful sexual romp into a magical world that will not disappoint.

...Harry could only wish he had classes this entertaining...

I thought I'd read the first of Ms. Tan's Magic U series, give it a try. Within a week, I bought the second book. The next day, I bought the third one. That's how much these stories sucked me in! Lots of interesting characters, well thought out world, great details about the area and the particulars of the magic. Truly awesome stuff!

Really solid opening to a series.
By A. Lipkin
I'm a huge fan of fantasy set in academia; beyond the nostalgia for the college years, it's a perfect time for character growth and development, and the setting has worked well for a number of books (Robert Silverberg's Book of Skulls and Matt Ruff's Fool on the Hill are two of my favorites).

This book is a blast, one that wears its influences overtly, but is hardly a pastiche. The setup is Harry Potter aged a few years -- Kyle Wadsworth, an orphan who has lived a not-all-that-happy (although hardly HP-miserable) life, finds himself not only accepted at Harvard, but suddenly accepted to Veritas, the secret school-within-the-school that trains wizards. He quickly starts making friends and attempting to catch up on the magic lessons he missed.

Tan doesn't focus that much on the courses, though; this is about Kyle learning skills outside of class, and yes, about him having sex. Technically, both Kyle and his girlfriend Jess remain virgins to preserve the potential magic power their virginity might offer, but as anyone who's ever been a teenager knows, there are plenty of ways to have fun without inserting tab a into slot b. And Tan writes incredibly hot sex scenes throughout the book.

But this isn't just a book about sex. Tan's got a large and great group of characters (including a much more realistic amount of diversity in terms of gender preferences than most college-set novels involve), she's clearly going for long-term plotbuilding (there are a bunch of hooks for future books), and she creates a danger-filled mystery with some nice twists.

Basically, if you're a fan of urban fantasy or academic magic books, you should read this. It's a blast. I'm definitely planning on reading them all.

Novel framework, practical advice, interesting examples
By Laura J. Kornish
This is a great book about innovation. In the preface, the authors ponder whether there is a contradiction in trying to provide structure to a creative endeavor like innovation. The book then develops a clear answer that there is no contradiction by showing how organizations have and can improve their innovation processes. I found the "innovation tournament" metaphor to be very helpful. I like how the metaphor is developed throughout the book, drawing on examples from industries as different as transportation, pharmaceuticals, and entertainment (movies, and, of course, American Idol).

I like the balance of practical, hands-on advice (e.g., running innovation workshops, using The Darwinator online tournament tool) and explanations of the underlying principles and theories. I especially like how every point is illustrated with a concrete example. And, the authors integrate their own experience and research with both executives and student innovators effectively.

This book is targeted toward professionals, people who are involved in some way with the innovation efforts in their organizations. I also find it relevant and useful for students. (I teach a new product development course to business students.)

Interesting and fun
By J. Wooten
The central idea in this book - that there is a logical and manageable approach to innovation - holds enormous potential for big companies and entrepreneurs alike. In a compelling and logical way, this 'how to' manual for analyzing, filtering, and choosing great opportunities walks through real-world examples and data as it educates on how to change your process of sparking and developing new ideas. Having used these ideas on projects ranging from Fortune 100 companies all the way down to single-person startups, I've seen the difference innovation tournaments can make; Ulrich and Terwiesch have developed a practical set of ideas that are simple and unique to the field. Execellent and fun read.

Applied Mechanics of Solids, by Allan F. Bower

Modern computer simulations make stress analysis easy. As they continue to replace classical mathematical methods of analysis, these software programs require users to have a solid understanding of the fundamental principles on which they are based.

Develop Intuitive Ability to Identify and Avoid Physically Meaningless Predictions

Applied Mechanics of Solids is a powerful tool for understanding how to take advantage of these revolutionary computer advances in the field of solid mechanics. Beginning with a description of the physical and mathematical laws that govern deformation in solids, the text presents modern constitutive equations, as well as analytical and computational methods of stress analysis and fracture mechanics. It also addresses the nonlinear theory of deformable rods, membranes, plates, and shells, and solutions to important boundary and initial value problems in solid mechanics.

The author uses the step-by-step manner of a blackboard lecture to explain problem solving methods, often providing the solution to a problem before its derivation is presented. This format will be useful for practicing engineers and scientists who need a quick review of some aspect of solid mechanics, as well as for instructors and students.

Select and Combine Topics Using Self-Contained Modules and Subsections

Borrowing from the classical literature on linear elasticity, plasticity, and structural mechanics, this book:

  • Introduces concepts, analytical techniques, and numerical methods used to analyze deformation, stress, and failure in materials or components
  • Discusses the use of finite element software for stress analysis
  • Assesses simple analytical solutions to explain how to set up properly posed boundary and initial-value problems
  • Provides an understanding of algorithms implemented in software code

Complemented by the author’s website, which features problem sets and sample code for self study, this book offers a crucial overview of problem solving for solid mechanics. It will help readers make optimal use of commercial finite element programs to achieve the most accurate prediction results possible.

The best quick reference for solid mechanics
By Tuhin Sinha
This is one of the best concise reference for a wide variety of topics in soild mechanics. The authour covers the most fundamental and important topics and this can be a helpful reference to anyone right from a begineer to advanced level researchers. The Maple and Matlab FEM codes accompanying the chapters are wonderful and illustrate the concepts in a very good way thus encouraging budding researchers to understand those topics by practicing them using an FEM code. A very well written text.

Good to review not to learn
By A. Gift For You
I am using this book to teach a solid mechanics course. The book style is as if someone has put his powerpoint lectures together and made a book. Many important subjects which need to be discussed in detail have been just mentioned in multiple bullets with very short statements. For example, the author does not prove the strain compatibility equations and just mentions them without even discussing intuitively or mathematically why we need those equations. Another example is Von Mises criterion which is not only not proved from shear strain energy point of view but also not well explained and compared to other models such as Tresca's criterion. There are many many other examples as such in this book which I think makes it improper to use as a textbook. The only good thing about the book is the fact that it contains a lot of material and it is very likely that you can find a formula which you do not remember in it. However, if you do not remember a topic you better look it up in other books.

Legendary for a Reason!
By Dingyi Sun
I had Prof. Bower as my primary instructor for a freshman engineering course in dynamics and vibrations, and his clarity in lectures most certainly comes through in this textbook. It covers an absurd range of topics (I've taken graduate level courses in continuum, elasticity, and plasticity since then, and they each cover about as much material as one or two chapters of this book) in great detail as well. Though this book may not be for college students just starting in engineering, I can most certainly recommend it for mechanical engineers at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels. If you are doing any coursework into the theory of mechanics, don't hesitate to get this; it has been one amazing reference work. After all, there is a reason why engineering professors at some of the top programs in the nation use this text with their courses.

Nice book with practice software
By Doren
I was wondering about the CPA materials, one of my friend recommended Gleim. I bought from a Amazon Market Place and got the book on time with practice software key. The book is really nice, details and incredible software. The book is very organized and well written and software adds more credibility. The software has different sections including Test session, Practice session, Performance Review sessions including help and support.
I really liked and would strongly recommend.
