Unfortunate title to essential jazz journalism

Whitney Balliett is one of my favorite jazz writers (along with Dan Morgenstern and Ira Gitler), and I've enjoyed reading his pieces in The New Yorker since the 1960s. In the introduction to this book Balliett says he chose the title COLLECTED WORKS because "I like its ring"; that's a bit unfortunate because it gives the wrong impression. These are not his "collected works" but rather, as he again says in the introduction, "a distillation of many of the reviews and critical pieces that I have written about jazz." If you saved most of the original articles as I did, you would have a fairly decent sized pile of pieces that are not included here; perhaps even worse, you would notice that many of the articles appear in the book in truncated form (perhaps that's where the "distillation" comes in). One of the reasons I bought the book was because from its title and size (almost 900 pages) I thought I could take the Collected part literally, and I'd be able to free up some file cabinet space by discarding the original magazine articles. No way. I know this is a personal issue (mainly), but buyers should be aware of what they're getting (or not getting) here.

That being said, what you do get is absolutely worth having. Balliett knows the music as well as anyone and describes what he hears clearly and directly. He writes about the entire spectrum of jazz, from the earliest years of the music up into the avant-garde. Besides being deeply appreciative of the jazz masters (Armstrong, Morton, Ellington, Basie, Parker, Rollins, Coleman, to name just a handful) he writes about hundreds of musicians, good, bad, indifferent (but mainly good) who made it onto the jazz scene. He is particularly fond of good drummers (being a drummer himself). Reading The New Yorker you could be almost assured of getting Balliett's perspective on important jazz happenings in (particularly) the NYC area every couple of weeks or so. It was a wonderful steady diet of superb jazz journalism and criticism. It's great to have what's been included between book covers now, and hopefully what's missing gets published in book form some day, too. I really could use that file space.

In this collection of jazz criticism, Balliett writes of one of the all-time great jazz singers, Mildred Bailey, that she "rarely indulged in blue notes" and that "she was not emotional."

Too few quality illustrations unlike the "richly illustrated" description can make you think

When I see a book with a cover like this, and then read in the description that the book is "richly illustrated", I expect a decent quantity of original quality reconstructions like those in the cover and back cover (made by Mark Hallett), specially for a book that sells new for a hundred dollars. Nothing more misleading: Most of the illustrations are drawings of bones, but the actual reconstructions depicting behaviour and adaptations are divided between a handful of frankly bad ones and some good ones: There are eleven illustrations with the quality of the ones in the cover and back cover (including those two) but not all are original, some were reused from other publications illustrated by the same author and most of them are black and white. Why the authors didn't included more original reconstructions and why they didn't comissioned all to Hallett (a professional paleoartist and a good one) is beyond me.
Lots of information on bones of scimitar cats compared to Smilodon though, but still pretty lacking in reconstructions which I deem very important for palaeontology works.

This book is fantastic. In this tome there is rich biology and paleontology that are supplemented with plenty of high quality illustrations and photographs. The study of sabre-toothed cats has arrived at a whole new level.

It's Beyond the Hero's Journey

Nancy and Patti help leaders understand why even our very best rehearsed and timely communications FLOP! Despite being brief, clear, charming... and even presenting to the right audience, won't always produce results.

Nancy and Patti will force you to look at communication and storytelling in yet another way. These ladies take one beyond the hero's journey and most importantly give leaders practical advice as to how to improve and better explain "the change" we would like our audience to experience.

Too often our audience/organization/customers/clients seem to agree on the next steps... they agree it's tactically the right way to take them... and despite you leading the way, though they are all in agreement with you, not enough follow.

Nancy and Patti will help you cross the chasm of empathy and persuasion in order to positively influence your audience.

Well why not 5 Stars?

I wish there was 2 rating systems, one for REAL Experts (like Nancy & Patti)... and one for wannabe internet experts. Because I am rating this book in light of their previous 2 books, this book is a 4 Star.

If Nancy had only written "Slideology" and skipped "Resonate", this would be a 5-Star... but in light of the HIGH BAR they have set at DUARTE, I think it's fair to say this is a 4-Star.

Don't worry, If this book is your Intro to Nancy Duarte and Patti... I promise you too will become a FAN!

Oh, and if you're wondering which of the 3 books to read first, I'd start with this book, as it feels more like an intro to Resonate,.. then Resonate, and finish with Slideology.

Finally a book that both inspires and gives the most practical advice on walking it out I've ever seen.

Do you believe that the stories you tell can change the world? What if I were to tell you that they already are, and you've been telling them your whole life?

Every day we tell ourselves stories that either tear us down or build is up.

"This world is getting worse and worse and there's nothing that I can do to change it. I can't even change myself..."

We believe this negative narrative so strongly that they literally create the reality we live in. So what do we do? The key is to tell ourselves a better story. One where we're the hero. One that ignites passion and change in ourselves and those around us.

"I have a dream..."

This book just came out and I'be already read it through twice-- scribbling notes like a mad man and underlining so much of the pages that it probably defeats the purpose. I'm using it as the blueprint for my life and our organization. And it's working.

If you're tired of books that tell you what's wrong with the world, but don't tell you how to walk it out or, if they attempt to, it reads like someone's doctoral thesis? Then you need to get this book. Don't let another day pass you by. It will change your life.

Casting Light on the Dark Arts of Communications

For Duarte and Sanchez, this book is in support of the common purpose they champion where change is driven by leaders, whom they term ‘Torchbearers’, envisioning new possibilities. They ‘light the path’ as they set out to change the world and bring ’Travelers’ on the journey along with them. If this sounds like the plot to Lord of the Rings, well, in addition to Durkheim, they quote Frodo Baggins, Aragorn and the others as they motivate the hobbits to set out on the quest for the Ring.

However, this book is anything but a fairy tale.

Duarte, Inc is one of the premier communications agencies in Silicon Valley. Since it was founded in 1990, Nancy Duarte has built a stellar reputation as a PowerPoint guru (with her first book, slide:ology) and general communications consultant (cemented by Resonate, her second book). With ‘Illuminate’ she has broadened her scope to include not only presentations and speeches, but stories, ceremonies and symbols. These are all weapons in the ‘torchbearer’s toolkit’ that can be employed to affect what people think, feel and do as they move through what she calls the ‘five stages of a venture’: Dream, Leap, Fight, Climb, and Arrive. If this sounds like the content of a classic 4�5 matrix, well, you’ll find it summarized in a handy-dandy fold-out between pages 58 and 59.

Using this taxonomy allows you to choose the right tool for the job depending which stage an audience is on the journey. While not a ‘paint by numbers’ approach to communications, after reading Illuminate you will know what to deploy if, say, you need to rally the troops. The advice is to deliver a ‘battle speech’ or tell an ‘overcome the enemy story’ or hold a ‘rally the spirits’ ceremony. What I really liked about the classification is that we’re not left with the usual Pollyanna advice that assumes everything is wonderful. Each stage addressees the negative as well as the positive. So if people in an organization are resistant to change we are told what we might hear them say (“I just don’t see how this could work”) and advised on how to craft and deliver a ‘revolution’ speech or ‘neglect the call’ story. By dealing with the dark side of communications Duarte & Sanchez have given leaders a robust set of guidelines well suited to the real world.

Some of the most powerful parts of the book deal with how different organizations dealt with total failure: when PeopleSoft was bought by Oracle and the employees made the company sign into a makeshift memorial; how Coke reversed their disastrous decision to abandon Classic Coke; how Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, addressed her employees when they needed to recall faulty ignition switches that had caused deaths.

I was struck by the degree of first-hand knowledge and insight in the case studies that conclude the main chapters. Each analysis includes an extensive narrative and quotes that make the study come alive. There’s a bonus a multi-point summary of highlights. Showing their Silicon Valley roots, Duarte & Sanchez’s case studies include the usual suspects— tech titans like IBM and Apple. But there’s also a floor-covering company, a non-profit, and a fast-food company. Most appropriately, the concluding study is of Duarte itself, detailing the transformation the company underwent as it pivoted to overhaul systems and improve operations.

Like her previous books, Illuminate is a beautifully designed, eminently readable, detailed account of the scenarios those of us in corporate communications face on a daily basis. Read it if your job is to enable the Torchbearer’s to ignite change, Frodo would certainly make sure it’s on his bookshelf back in the Shire.

Excellent Preparation for VCP Exam and General Knowledge

I found this book to be extremely helpful in my preparation for the VCP 5.5 DCV exam. I took the vSphere Install Configure Manage (ICM) course prior to reading this book and had a home lab setup with VMware workstation. I would say that 20% of my knowledge came from the ICM course and 80% came from this book coupled with practicing in my home lab. There is no way you will pass the VCP exam without significant prior hands on experience if you only take the ICM course (which is required to be eligible for certification).

You can either dig through all the white papers and documentation or you can pony up a small sum to have all the information in a single place. It is money very well spent. The authors have done an excellent job of presenting the information in a thorough and relatively concise manner considering the scope of the text. I especially appreciated the "gray box asides" which give secondary information or common problem guidance.

One word of caution for VCP seekers, there will likely be 5-10 different questions on vCenter Operations (vCOPs) Manager in the exam which is covered only briefly in this book. Specifically you need to understand how the major and minor badges work and the components of vCOPs which is is not covered in the book. I would also recommend reading the technical whitepapers for vSphere Data Protection (VDP) to make sure you understand the different features and capabilities of VDP vs VDP Advanced. The text is so well written that I am still going to rate at 5* as this book was tremendously helpful for myself. I am currently reading a second text Lowe has co-authored named VMware vSphere Design and it is equally good so far.

Journey to Virtualisation - Becoming a Trusted Advisor

Becoming au fait with virtualisation had been a career goal of mine for some time. My employer had just signed on a new vendor that required me to become more conversant with Virtualisation. This necessitated my attendance at a VCP5-DCV 5-day Boot Camp.

While mandatory to sit the VCP exam, the course was delivered rather quickly with poor explanation of many concepts i.e., the vSphere Distributed Switch was not covered neither were other features in vSphere Enterprise Plus. It left me wanting more. Mastering vSphere 5.5 was recommended, and it has not disappointed. Instead of making vague statements e.g., "performance issues", this book follows up with a full explanation and reasons delivered in a very conversant style.

This is one of two books I'm utilising for my VCP5.5-DCV exam studies. You can either read this book or go straight to VMware pubs and have to wallow your way through thousands of pages of intros, maximums, configuration settings, and the like. It can be overwhelming when you're starting out - and quite dry. Mastering VMware vSphere 5.5 makes it easier.

I have already read this book cover-to-cover. And now wading my way through it slowly whilst practising lab exercises. The chapter on Storage was particularly enlightening. Even before sitting the exam, the book has benefited me in my daily work, in making better informed decisions in the solutions proposed to customers, and in being a trusted advisor to my colleagues.

A great tome to add to any IT Professional's library.

Passed my exam

I am a Virtualization Architect and I found this book to be a great dive into VMware vSphere. I used this as a prep for one of my certification exams and passed with no issue.

I purchase a lot of products on Amazon. Some of those products are free, some are at a discounted price, and others are full price purchases. I will always note when a product is free or discounted. I have listed my rating system below as a reference.

My personal guidelines for reviewing products:
5 stars – I love the product! Not only would I buy it again I would recommend it to friends and family.
4 stars – I like it, and I would buy it again. I would prefer a few minor tweaks but overall still a great product.
3 stars - It was okay, but perhaps not for me. I would still consider the product as a gift for others.
2 stars – The product could use improvement and I would not buy it again until it was fixed.
1 star – I dislike the product and I would not purchase it for myself or as a gift for others.

Truly a collection of his best works.

I do not see how anyone could rate this book any lower than a 5 star. Such compelling writing. I truly was moved. The way he lead you on with Sita's daughter Kalika. The surprises around every corner. And the ending. Oh book six was so moving. My I have to say that a good book you can't put down. But the best book MAKES you put it down because it is soo good you can't go on for a bit. You have to stop and consider or reread what has happened. He could not have come up with a better ending. The epiloge was a great way to end it with Seymour. You have simply got to read his whole series. The whole shabang of things. From The Last Vampire to The Last Vampire 6: Creatures of Forever. You will never regret reading such a book. My compliments to Christopher Pike. As I young writer you are such an inspiration and I truly could not compare to your work. Read the first collector's edition and then read this one. You won't regret it.

This is in all counts my favorite series

The last vampire was the first book i ever read by christopher pike(several years ago). After the first few pages of the first chapter I was hooked. I went out the next day and bought a boxed set of books 1-5. This was a long time ago and I must say im still buying christopher pikes book. I can honestly say ive read more then 3/4's of all his published work that I know of. I completely devour his books and find myself reReading them over and over again. His stories take on a life of there own, not only do they make you feel like your in with the character. You honestly feel like you know them, even care for them(come on anyone whos read this title tell me your not in love with sita) I dont recommend this book for anyone under 13 as this book isnt written for either young adults or adults. Christopher pike has always excelled at pushing the limits in all his books which go into a whole league of there own.
Other fantastic books my christopher pike are: Scavenger Hunt(this was the second book ive read from pike that wasent the last vamp series. I love this book just as much as its such a great read)
Remember me Series(I recommend buying the entire 3book set. the character in this is incredible with her development and things take interesting perspectives after she's dead :)
Master Of Murder. Another fantastic book. I liked this book so much that ive read it around 20 times already and just started reading it again. The main character can also be found in around 3 other short stories by pike found in his Tales from the grave yard 2part set
The Eternal Enemy, This book ran fast all the way through and sorta left me wondering where everything went, but again the character was incredible and left me with many memorible "I think im producing to many rela waves", "What are rela waves?" "there inchoherant. they make you think about butterflies and rainbows"
Chain Letter Series: This book was fantastic. Reading it one time through wasent enough as soon as I finished it I started on it again.
Die Softly: This book was both tragic and wonderful, I wont spoil it for anyone but it has so many twist and turns its incredible my head didnt spin

Initial Discovery or Re-discovering

I read these when they came out in the late 90's and re-bought them after my Husband left them during a move a decade ago. I found when I searched 3 more new books had been added to the series. Awesome.
This story has special meaning for me and were a favorite reread idk how many times now. Re-discovering them was fun given I have internet access now. If you haven't read this its worth reading just to get to the last 3 books. The writers skill has improved greatly since the first 6 books. As audiences pushed for greater detail in their literature. Christopher Pike was ahead of his time, as the opening to Red Dice proves. I would describe it as matrix like, only The Matrix didn't come out for over a year after Red Dice was released. Only book series I own on hard copy. :)
