A Good Collection of Essays on Baseball and Movies

For more than a decade and a half, the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame and the State University if New York at Oneonto have sponsored an annual conference on baseball and American culture. This collection of essays originated as a vehicle for the publication of some of the research presented at those conferences relative to baseball and film. It is a dandy work that offers something for almost everyone. Divided in four major parts, or "reels" as the editors call them, it contains essays on baseball films, depictions of Babe Ruth in the movies, baseball as seen in non-baseball films, and a set of interviews of directors, actors, and others associated with baseball films,

By far the most interesting part of the book is the first "reel," in which several authors analyze such films as "The Natural" (1984) and "Field of Dreams" (1989). While there have long been baseball movies--some of them renowned such "The Pride of the Yankees" (1942) about Lou Gehrig--many of are forgettable--such as "Rhubarb" where a cat inherits the Brooklyn Dodgers--the modern, effective baseball movie may be traced to "The Natural." Throughout, the best of these films use baseball as a backdrop to explore larger social and cultural issues, the tension of good versus evil, and the quest for spiritual fulfillment. Also interesting are the interviews at the conclusion of the book, especially the ones with Penny Marshall, who directed "A League of their Own" about women in baseball during World War II; Kevin Costner, who has made three memorable baseball movies, "Bull Durham," "Field of Dreams," and "For Love of the Game"; and Vin Skully, who literally "called" the perfect game depicted in "For Love of the Game."

Throughout, this is an interesting and useful volume. Like all edited works, this one suffers from unevenness and interpretation from chapter to chapter, but overall it is quite a useful book.

The *only* book I've ever thrown away.

I tried to like this book. I enjoyed following along with my pregnancy each week and looked forward to reading a little about what to expect each week during my daughter's first year. But by the time she was 5 months old, I'd been instructed to let my baby cry-it-out, told I had to start solids or she'd never learn to eat on her own, and instructed that now was a good time to wean her from the breast to formula. Much of the advice in this book directly contradicts with what the AAP recommends, and even more of it contradicts with my mommy instincts. There are many great childrearing books out there, from the attachment parenting based Baby Book from Dr. Sears to the sound, mainstream advice from the AAP in Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5. Please, please - look elsewhere for a parenting book.

While there are parts of this book I enjoyed, there were many more frustrating aspects to it. The milestones seem to be consistently REALLY early. In a group of 20 babies, frequently only 1 or 2 have hit any of the milestones in the given time frame. In addition all of the feeding information is contrary to what my pediatrician has given (when and how to start solids, when to wean -- 4 months?). What to Expect was much more useful.

The Indolence of the Filipino is a socio-political essay published in La solidaridad in Madrid in 1890. It was written by Jos� Rizal as a response to the accusation of Indio or Malay indolence. He admits the existence of indolence among the Filipinos, but it could be attributed to a number of reasons. He traces its causes to factors such as the climate and social disorders. He defends the Filipinos by saying that they are by nature not indolent, because in fact, even before the arrival of Spaniards, Filipinos have been engaged in economic activities such as agriculture and trade. Indolence therefore has more deeply rooted causes such as abuse and discrimination, inaction of the government, rampant corruption and red tape, wrong doctrines of the church and wrong examples from some Spaniards who lead lives of indolence which ultimately led to the deterioration of Filipinos values. In the end, Rizal sums up the main causes of indolence to the limited training and education Filipino natives receive and to the lack of national sentiment and unity among them. Education and liberty, according to Rizal, would be the cure to Filipino indolence.

Jos� Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda (June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896), was a Filipino polymath, patriot and the most prominent advocate for reform in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. Written a century ago but still relevant

What's amazing about this book is that it was written a century ago but is still relevant today. Much of what he discussed about the Philippines on the hassles in starting new enterprise, on the church owning large tracks of land, and on how the natives are perceived to be indolent, are still relevant today. Although I believe the last one is starting to no longer be true, as all the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW's) stationed the world over, have shown how industrious the Filipinos are.

The book is free and is a classic written by a national hero. It only has 5 chapters so you can finish in less than a few hours. A must-read for all Filipinos.

A worthwhile read

Although this probably isn't of interest to most Americans, it is a worthwhile read
for those with an interest in history and culture of The Philippines.

This is a short read, very very scholarly, and should be read along with
some of the author's other works and relevant history of the time.

El Filibusteriso (The Filibuster) by the same author is superb.

Anyone who loves politics, history, culture, wants to understand the world
should read some jose Rizal. He paid for his ideas with his life.

analysis of Philippine culture

Having grown up in the Philippines, I find that this entire literary work resonates with me. If he could see where the country is at now, I think Rizal would be pleased to see that, in many ways, we have broken free of the shackles imposed on us by the atrocious Spanish colonial rule. I think he would be sad to see that many of its effects (corruption, e..) still permeate life in the country. He would also be sad to see that this has resulted in a continual exodus of talent out of the country, to places where hard work and honesty are rewarded. Though written over 100 years ago, his analysis of what ails Philippine culture is still relevant. Considering the social and political climate in which this work was written, one can only marvel at Rizal's courage. As another reviewer noted, Rizal sought to awaken the minds and hearts of his countrymen to their natural rights, at the price of his life.
A more mundane aspect of this review-the kindle version is rife with typos, making it hard to read in some places. This is aggravated by the fact that this work is written in the language and style of its time and so discerning what the "mistyped" (more likely, misrecognized, if OCR software was used) word originally was may be challenging. Still, I am grateful that I was able to read it for free. Not complaining.

An invaluable reference work --

Have you ever heard about The National Negro Opera Company? Founded by Mary Cardwell Dawson, the company made its debut in Pittsburgh in 1941. This is but one of the fascinating things you can discover in this marvelous book. If you have an interest in music of whatever variety, your library is incomplete without this book.
This 3rd edition was done in 1997, thus it is quite up-to-date in its coverage of classical, jazz, rock, pop, gospel, swing, ragtime or blues. If it is music as practiced, performed or composed by people of color, this is where you'll find valuable information about it. Beginning with Africa and continuing to the present day, the four sections detail this rich history: Song in a Strange Land (1619-1775); Let My People Go (1776-1865); Blow Ye the Trumpet (1865-1919) and Lift Every Voice (1920-1996). The latter section is particularly informative reading with sections on Jazz, The Harlem Renaissance, and the Mid-Century Decades. It is these years in which artists of color finally took their well-deserved place on the musical stages of the world. Of course, they had been visible in their own world, and the popularity of such major composers as Scott Joplin and Duke Ellington allowed them to more or less effortlessly cross-over to the 'white' world. Lena Horne, the Mills Brothers, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway were--and still are--names to be reckoned with in any list of fabulous performers.
And then there was Marion Anderson who finally made her way to the Metropolitan Opera at the very end of her career, making way for Robert McFerrin, Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Simon Estes and George Shirley, who were very much pioneers in their respective repertoire. Today, thankfully, artists of color are not at all rare on the concert and/or opera stages of the world. But lest we forget the individual trauma these artists suffered in order to be able to compete in this way, we need to remember the past while we are glorying in the present. This book will, if you let it, open your mind and your ears to wonderful, glorious sounds, without which our world would be a much quieter and poorer place.
The author of this book is the renowned Eileen Southern (Professor Emerita of Music and Afro-American Studies at Harvard University) who is herself a musician as well as a writer, and is eminently qualified to illuminate The Music of Black Americans to the world in general.
Pages 613 through 646 comprise a rich bibliography and discography; the index takes up 41 pages. NO music lover should be without this invaluable reference work.

Cosa consigliare ad un appassionato di musica afro-americana che, conoscendo un po' di inglese, decidesse di leggere qualcosa per cui valga veramente la pena di fare un po' di fatica?
Personalmente non avrei molti dubbi: credo che l'opera pi� completa che esiste sul mercato e che associa alla competenza una buona leggibilit� anche per chi non � di madre lingua sia proprio questo.
Eileen Southern � Professor Emerita di Musica e Studi Afro-americani alla Harvard University di Boston, fondatrice ed editrice della rivista The Black Perspective in Music, che � stata pubblicata dal 1973 al 1990, e autrice, coautrice ed editrice di numerosi volumi sulla musica e la cultura afroamericana.
Il libro in questione, di 678 pagine, ripercorre tutta la storia della musica afroamericana dalle origini (1619) fino all'ultimo decennio del XX secolo. L'opera � suddivisa in 14 capitoli ed � completata con un'accurata bibliografia e discografia e un indice dei nomi e dei temi.
Il linguaggio � piano e comprensibile anche a chi non abbia una quotidiana familiarit� con l'americano scritto.
Il libro della Southern affronta tutti i diversi generi musicali dei neri americani, dal canto in congregazione alla musica urbana del primo ottocento, dai worksongs ai traveling road shows, dal blues al ragtime, ecc..
Il taglio critico trasversale, che analizza l'emergere della musica nera all'interno della pi� ampia realt� sociologica e culturale dell'America Settentrionale, consente di cogliere con chiarezza le fasi dell'evolversi della cultura afroamericana, non solo musicale. Si tratta di un'opera pi� descrittiva che interpretativa, in tal senso pi� adatta a chi, volendo avviare la propria conoscenza del fenomeno musicale afroamericano, non � interessato all'analisi del significato profondo della musica e dei testi e a conoscere i diversi modelli interpretativi proposti dagli studiosi.

Great source on the subject!

I am using this book for my masters thesis and I must say that I am very pleased. Ms. Southern did an excellent job researching the subject and the book is put together well. There is so much information involved!!! She starts from the VERY beginning and smoothly takes you through the ride of African-American music. Each section is very thorough. This text is perfect for anyone who is researching the subject or just wants to gain knowledge on this rich music. A+++
