Ruined by poor transliteration into the English alphabet

I'm a big fan of Lonely Planet phrasebooks because they pack a lot of practical information into an efficient format. Usually I'm especially impressed by the grammar section at the front, which gives the fearless language learner just enough info to plunge in.

This title in the series unfortunately has a fatal flaw: while it uses actual Hindu, Urdu, and Bengali script through the phrasebook sections, it doesn't use them in the grammar sections. Furthermore, the roman transliterations don't accurately represent all the sounds in the languages (for you language geeks, they don't distinguish the dental/retroflex and aspirated/unaspirated consonants). Imagine if a Japanese speaker tried to learn English from a book that merged L and R, then multiply that problem several times over.

Consequently the grammar section is useless. The phrasebook section is useful for pointing at text on the page but very misleading for speaking or understanding.

I also question squeezing Bengali into a book that's busy enough with Hindi and Urdu.

Pity! I hope LP corrects this in future editions.

Full of content, not laid out well

This book will be fine for looking up phrases on my flight, but as an off-the-cuff use, will be difficult. The book isn't organized particularly well (e.g. sections), so I can imagine I'll have trouble using it as a reference.

About the Author
Marlyn Shelton is Professor Emeritus of Atmospheric Science at the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of California, Davis, USA. He is a member of the American Water Resources Association, the Association of American Geographers, and the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. He has been elected as a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellow and a Fellow of the Ohio Academy of Science. He has authored and co-authored four previous books, published numerous scientific papers, and served as an associate editor for the Journal of the American Water Resources Association from 1991-9. He has given interviews to newspapers and television stations on topics such as climate change, El Ni�o, floods, drought, and air quality, and has presented lectures and workshops for the US Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Climatic Water Budgets

This is Shelton, Professor emeritis, UC-Davis, at his forte. This is what he taught and a work of passion. The world must come to see water and climate from this perspective - a whole or big picture way of looking at things. Not mathematically intimidating and a good treatment. I wish water managers at the local, state and country level thought this way (compared to "go get more"). This is a big treatment. Even understanding the subject it will take a while to get through it all - and will work as a handy reference to refer to from time to time.

Once again Col. Chambers is in over his head. At least this time it is in water. Rhein reminds us through Col. Chamber's misadventures what a bunch of pompous asses we all are. Col. Chambers is both lovable and despicable at the same time, and always thoroughly human. The more his nose is tilted up, the bigger a fool he is making of himself. But you have got to love him because his faithful companion does -- whether it's a bow-wow or a frog. Well done Rhein!

The Author/Illistartor targets sophisticated intellectuals with "merry hearts."

I wrote and illustrated this book to appeal to sophisticated intellectuals with "merry hearts." I've had as much fun with this one as I have with my other two, and from its reception so far I'm optimistic it will resonate well not only with the yachting set but with anyone who enjoys a good laugh. One person told me it was like watching a sit com series. That's a good summation.

In the not too distant future, this guide to surviving in troubled times is going to be invaluable to all of us. I learned so much from reading this book. I'll be reading it again to make sure that I haven't missed anything because the way things are going, we're all going to need this advice and practical help.

the best description of psychopaths I have read so far

That is a lot of information here for people planning for a disaster. I live in New York, and I began to think about leaving after I read that.
However, the biggest disaster I know is to have a psychopath in your life. they do not all become serial killers, but lots of them do it by proxy. this was most enlightening, and answered many questions I had about them. The bibliography was stunning as well.

Young listeners will be chanting along almost immediately: “Four hungry babies fret, sulk, and pout. ‘Feed us! Feed us!’ the little ones shout. / ‘Hush, you little egg-crackers,’ Mama Bird coos, ‘and I’ll fly to the garden to find you more food.’” The countdown element is irresistible—the number of hungry chicks decreases right along with Mama Bird’s energy. Though the gouache art is a little plain, it humorously returns to the same composition for each round of feeding. Just the thing to turn a large-group read-aloud into a frenzied chicken coop. Lil guy loves this book!

My son is almost 3. When this book came, he took it from me as soon as I opened it (as he always does when I get him a new book). He brings it to me all the time to read it to him, he carries it around with him everywhere. It's been with us to the grocery store and my dr appts. He absolutely loves this book, he counts the "chicks" as he calls them and tells me all about the broken eggs. He's big time into this book, I hope he likes it for a long time. It's adorable!

Good rhythm, my daughter loves it

We just got this book a few days ago, and already my daughter (age 2.5) has made my wife and I read this book at least 15 times. The book is about a mother bird's quest to feed her seven children. The books counts the number of hungry children at each step, records mama's food finding mission for one of them, and repeats, effectively counting down from 7 to 1. It has the standard repetition elements that small children and toddlers love, along with brightly colored and attractive pictures. The book has an excellent meter and rhyming scheme to it which makes it very attractive to younger children.

The only reason that it didn't get 5 stars is a consistent complaint of mine about children's books - they frequently portray the family unit in a very stereotypical and unfair fashion. After mama bird is done, it is revealed that daddy bird was sitting there the whole time without raising a feather. (The only thing missing from his pose in the book was a TV and a beer can). Frankly this consistently portrayed stereotype of the how the family functions is unfair to both mothers and fathers, not to mention the children who are learning from it. I don't want this review to focus on this since it's a larger problem so I'll end here, I just wanted to explain the "missing" fifth star.

A bit on the long side, with unusual flow.

Seven Hungry Babies is a relatively middle of the road counting story for toddlers.

The artwork is not particularly impressive (or lacking), though the bright primary colors should help to hold the attention of very young children. The quality of the book itself is on the better side of what I'm used to, and the pages don't rip too easily when my 2 year-old gets "grabby".

The flow of the story is a bit strange, in that some parts rhyme and some don't. Unlike most books for this age group, it isn't one where you can easily disengage your brain when reading it aloud.

I won't give away the shock ending here, but the story itself is pretty ho-hum, and has been done many, many times before (e.g. Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed).

If your kid really likes birds, I guess this is a solid buy. Beyond that, though, I wouldn't recommend it over any other book where you progressively count down.

Aphra Behn flourished in the cosmopolitan world of the London playhouse and the court. It was she, Virginia Woolf wrote, "who earned [women] the right to speak their minds."

Joanna Lipking is Lecturer in English at Northwestern University, where she has taught since 1979. A Columbia Ph.D., she writes on women’s emergence in print culture. An interesting story of British colonialism by the first professional female author.

Aphra Behn is usually considered the first professional female writer so just for that reason, it's worth trying out her writing. This particular story is about an African prince who is kidnapped into slavery. It's touching and sad. It's seems to have a lot of political overtones about the state of British colonialism. It can be read as a commentary on slavery or racism but that's probably not what she was meaning to say considering the time period in which she wrote. It's a quick read but there were a few places where I did have to go back and reread because of the more archaic style of writing. All in all, not difficult to read if you are use to reading older literature and worth the trouble as a piece of British literary history.

I loved the characters of Oroonoko and Imoinda for their noble hearts and innocence even though life was rough to them. They still believed in human kindness up to the end of their lives.

It's interesting and has some weird plot turns, but I've had to read it for college lit classes too many times! This edition has some really interesting & helpful resources, though, so if you have to get a copy of this story, this is a good option.
