Jet Lag Writing Style

I was excited to read this book given I have always been interested in what it is like to fly these massive hunks of metal. I have also read a few books by this author about airline crashes, which always proved to be interesting. So here is my problem, I was expecting an interesting and maybe at times even exciting book, what I got was a somewhat bland, even dull at times book that spelled out all the facts about flying a jet. OK, I know that is exactly what the author stated the book would be about on the dust jacket, but he did not mention that the text would be bone dry.
With that criticism out of the way, I did enjoy learning about flying a commercial jet. I thought the run down of the mechanical operations of the aircraft and the actual job of flying the aircraft were the most interesting. The rest of the book was informative and in enough detail to be considered a good overall review, it was just a bit dry, textbook dry. To be honest I do not know exactly what I would have done to make the book more exciting, but hey, he is the author. It is his job to make the book interesting. And to be a nitpicker, how much actually changes with each new version of the book? Overall the book was ok, it had some interesting parts but really is only for someone that is truly interested in how these aircraft work and what it is like to fly them.

Fascinating introduction on how to fly commercial airliners.

This book is designed for two groups of people: pilots who desire to someday fly the 'big ones', and non-pilots who desire to someday fly the 'big ones'. The author provides an introduction to each of the major systems of a large commercial aircraft, and explains how flying large jet airliners is different from flying smaller piston or turbine powered airplanes. The author has taken a potentially very difficult subject and made it fairly easy for the novice pilot (or aspiring pilot) to understand. A very interesting book well worth reading, and a must have for all you 'wannabe' airline pilots. (This is a review of the first edition).

Fascinating look into Carthusian life

First off, it should be noted that this book really isn't something everyone will be interested in. It's not a popular overview of the Carthusian Order, or an in-depth examination of their spirituality. It is written, first and foremost, as a guidebook apparently for vocational retreatants and postulants in a Charterhouse.

It is a fairly short volume, but it has an overview of monasticism at the beginning before diving into the truly interesting part: an introduction to Carthusian spirituality and interior prayer. It is fascinating and mystical, and much credit is due to the publishers for making this rare glimpse into the interior life of a Carthusian Charterhouse available to us.

The final few chapters of the volume deal with the more mundane but no less fascinating practical details of life in a Charterhouse, explaining to the postulant the rules and guidelines of everyday life, such as how laundry is handled, or requests for repairs in a cell are made, and the basic rubrics of the Carthusian liturgy in chapel. Much of this carries the disclaimer that it will be explained in full by the Novice Master, but it is no less intriguing.

All in all, a great read for anyone interested in the Carthusian Order, their spirituality, and the practical details of their daily lives.

This informative little book is about what it takes to become a monk "Marine." Their austere life and the difficult schedule they live by makes them able to withstand martyrdom that would quail the heart of anyone less well trained or less devoted to finding and loving God.

A Must-Have for Any Designer

I'm a college student majoring in interactive media and I bought this book for independent study. My degree courses often deal with specific aspects or applications of design, but I wanted to gain a better understanding of general design principles. I am happy to report that this book is rich with design information that can be utilized by all species of designers!

Each topic is given two pages - one page is more text-heavy and the other has visuals that demonstrate or exemplify the design principle at hand. Despite the seemingly brief dedication to each principle, the book is dense, efficient, and favors minimalism so although you may be able to scan over a principle in seconds, you need to take the time and study the information being presented in order to soak all of it in. Lidwell does a fantastic job at providing a survey of some of the most pertinent design principles. I foresee referencing this book throughout the rest of university studies and beyond.

Sufficient Book On Design Principles

This book was required for a college class. The best I can describe it is like it's a lean and thin slice of steak—no fat, and not that much steak.

You get a chapter by chapter checklist of design principles. Some you most likely already know, a lot you didn't. Each topic doesn't extend past a few pages. Within each chapter there are several real life examples of each design principle so you can understand what they are talking about.

All in all, I was craving more, but this book was more than a sufficient meal. The price is in line with the content you would receive so it does its job with nothing more and nothing less. Recommended.

About the Author

Christine Alfano has been a lecturer in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric since 1998.  She holds a BA from Brown University and PhD from Stanford and specializes in digital rhetoric.  In her recent PWR courses, “The Rhetoric of Gaming,” “Networked Rhetoric,” "Technologies of iDentity" and "Cultural Interfaces," Christine challenges students to explore how writing in different technological modes (from traditional Microsoft Word documents, to blogs, threaded discussions, social network profiles, video blogs and wikis) transforms the modern practice of communication and how we represent ourselves online and off.  In addition, Christine is the technology specialist for the Cross-Cultural Rhetoric Project, a project that allows Stanford PWR students to engage in intercultural collaboration with students from other universities around the world using video conferencing and other modes of communication technologies.

 

Dr. Alyssa J. O'Brien is a Lecturer in the Program and Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University, where she directs the Cross-Cultural Rhetoric initiative and publishes scholarship and textbooks on visual rhetoric, writing pedagogy, and global learning. She has been an invited speaker in Asia and Europe on subjects such as global learning, communication for leadership, visual rhetoric, and “mapping a change in writing.”  In 2006, Alyssa won the Phi Beta Kappa Outstanding Teaching Award, and what she enjoys most is helping people discover their voices in writing of all kinds.  Her current first- and second-year writing courses focus on visual rhetoric, cross-cultural rhetoric, globalization, and communication for leadership.  Before coming to Stanford in 2001, she taught composition, creative writing, literature, and business writing at Cornell University, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Rochester.

Brenda Yates grew up on military bases. After living in Tennessee, Delaware, Florida, Michigan, Massachusetts, Japan and Hawaii, she settled first in Boston, then Los Angeles. Her work appears in journals including Askew, Brain of Forgetting, Chaparral, Cider Press Review, Coe Review, DASH, Eclipse, Ilanot Review, Illuminations, In Posse Review, Kattywompus, Mississippi Review, Mixitini Matrix, Pearl, Princemere Journal, Sliver of Stone, Spillway, StepAway Magazine, and in Blue Arc West: An Anthology of California Poets (Tebot Bach), City of the Big Shoulders: An Anthology of Chicago Poetry (University of Iowa Press), Manifest West (Western Press Books) and The Southern Poetry Anthology, Volume VI: Tennessee (Texas Review Press). The incredible beauty of the writen word

I keep this book on my bedside table, where I can reach it when I want to be soothed by Ms. Yates' enormous capacity for the beauty of the written word. Sensory language that makes use of the physical world around us and the inner yearnings of our souls. Her keen eye and her enormous heart combine to help us understand some of the more complex issues in our lives.

Her descriptions of nature are the best I've read

Each night before I go to sleep I read one or two poems from BODILY KNOWLEDGE. The beauty and rhythm of Brenda Yates' poetic language,
soothes, enlightens and enriches one's view of the self and world at large. Her descriptions of nature are the best I've read. Her poems will last for generations to come. They are universal. One never tires re-reading them.

Brenda's poetry is wonderful, charming
