The scope is more restrictive than that of other heavyweights, e.g., Sir Banister Fletcher's a History of Architecture and Spiro Kostof and others' A History of Architecture: Settings and Rituals, which include non-Western and vernacular architecture. Nevertheless, this new volume considers diverse modes of modern architecture that have flourished, abetted by computer-aided design and unprecedented wealth, during the past 20 years. An Adventure in Living

My old school friend, Erik Norgaard, has crafted an exceptional book that will keep you turning the pages. The story of Erik's life is truly inspirational and proves once again that boundless optimism, a "never give up" attitude and the motto "carpe diem" can bring you a very long way indeed. His description of his life in Denmark, Africa, United States, Micronesia and many, many other places are so vivid that you feel you are right there with him. A must read for adventurous souls !!

GREAT READ!

This book offers an insight into the generation before me and made me realize just how tough one can be: For example, the author describes bicycling all the way through Europe and back -- but on an old bike with no gears and with very little to eat. The author's fascinating life reads like historical fiction, yet is real. It covers his childhood growing up in part in a Nazi-occupied Denmark to his work as an engineer in southern Africa, then all over the globe. What has stuck with me the most is his risk taking business ventures and his pure love of life. This book is especially interesting to entrepreneurs who want to see how it was done, as well as young engineers who will learn what life was like starting out as a young engineer in the 50ies.

Lovely Photos, So-so Text

This is an enjoyable book introducing many different places -- mostly residential, but also some hotels and restaurants -- with a variety of Chinese designs.
The best part of the book is the photography by Michael Freeman. In most of the rooms he captures a feeling that it's lived in, a part of someone's daily life. Some books I own on Asian design don't have this quality: the rooms either appear too staged or the photographer gives them a sterile feeling. I could recommend this book on the photos alone.
The text is not quite up to standards of the photos, but it's acceptable. The author, Sharon Leece, obviously knows her subject, but she often lapses into blurb-style. For example, she writes on one house: "The words colourful, extravagent, and opulent can hardly begin to describe the palatial home of Contrasts Gallery owner Pearl Lam."
Another fun aspect of this book is that the places it showcases aren't just the homes of wealthy individuals. You see not only the more than 13,000 square foot Manhattan apartment of Chinese antiquities dealer Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, with its numerous expensive Chinese antiques, but you also get to see how some people with obviously much smaller budgets still managed to design their home with a unique Chinese flavor.

Lovely book for collectors and anyone interested in China

Reading this was a pleasant surprise, but what impresses most about this beautifully-designed book is not that it opens up all the elements of Chinese style and how its used in modern living -which it does in a interesting way.
But that it includes homes of most of the foremost China antiques dealers/collectors in the world.
Probably for the first time ever in print, we can see photographs of the homes of China experts Grace Wu Bruce in Hong Kong, Robert Ellsworth in New York (his is the biggest single apartment in Manhattan, apparently) and Kai-Yin Lo in Hong Kong.
That this book features their private homes shows they must have given their backing to this book - making it more than another stunning Style book.
Overall, this is a luxurious, well put-together book with an
interesting selection of beautiful apartments from many Cities. Recommended for anyone interested in things Chinese.

Rich, but in the same kind of room

A wide range of (mostly) rather luxurious rooms filled with everything and anything Chinese. But you won't find much of authentic traditional chinese homes here (and indeed the dustjacket clearly announces this). Although the rooms are sometimes packed with Chinese things, they almost all still feel western/international/chinese, mixed in different proportions. That said, the photos are great and it's a joy to visit all these apartements and houses and select your favourites. Since each place only gets two (or three) spreads generally, a string of different locations can be presented and you're invited to more rooms and settings than anyone can digest at one read-through. And that's great, you can return again and again to this very rich book.

Very Useful and Helpful

Karl Coryat's THE BASS PLAYER BOOK is a collection of some of the most helpful articles from Bass Player magazine's first ten years. It is well organized and informative. It contains materials that should prove helpful for beginners, intermediate level players, and 4 string veterans.
Part One contains 15 chapters on Playing the Bass. It covers everything from what to do when you string up your very first bass, to basic theory, to requirements of the working bassist.
Part Two covers equipment in 11 chapters. Here you find informative chapters on how to buy a bass (electric and acoustic), installing strings, setup, amps and effects, uprights, and recording among others.
Part Three includes chapters on 8 of the greatest bass innovators from james Jamerson (of Motown fame) to Jaco, Flea, and Michael Manring. [One shortcoming to be noted - you CANNOT have a section on bass innovators and leave out Victor Wooten of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones].
Finally there is a chapter discussing 30 albums every bassist MUST own. Although there some on the list with which any of us would disagree, and others which we would say should have been included, the choice isn't bad. A wide variety of music is represented from reggae to jazz, from country to funk, from blues to latino, from rock to fusion. And Victor's album A SHOW OF HANDS is included here.
For an intermediate level player like myself, there was plenty of helpful and inspiring chapters. I know there are chapters that would have been helpful when I first started, and I can imagine that there is plenty here to please even the virtuosos among us.

A good book, but not the only book

As a beginning bass player I got a lot out of this book. It's fun, well written, lots of pictures. I found the intro to theory very readable. It was all new to me and I liked the way it was presented. In fact, the sections sort of repeat themselves in some places, but that's good, it reinforces some points.

A real strong point is the overview of bass styles and the written examples of typical bass lines in rock, jazz and genre. That was fun and interesting and as I learn I go back to those sections and learn more. There are real nuggets of playing wisdom hidden in those chapters.

The chapters on the various stars of the instrument were fun. (Funny thing here is that, after stressing good playing position in the opening chapters, most of the artists pictured are usually providing counter examples) The discography of must-have CDs I could do without, better would be a section at the end of each chapter on the artists recommending their specific works.

But this should not be the book you use for practice or the only one you use to learn to play. There are lots of other books that do that better. This is a good addition to your library and supplement to the practice books. It's a reference book, fun and informational, with some good playing tips.

Minor weak points: the written examples in the book are too small to read easily. Using this book for serious practice is a strain. The chapters that cover the various styles and give examples are very helpful, but rock get's the lion's share (OK there's more rock in the world than any other kind of music and most bass players are in that space) but the sections on jazz and country could be expanded just a bit. A CD sampler would have been cool, but it probaby would have raised the price another $10

Great Book For The Novice Or Intermediate Bassist

This book will be a wonderful tool for the bassist who is just beginning to learn his/her instrument or the more experienced player who would like to explore their options. The theoretical and instructional section is as comprehensive as is possible for those without the benefit of an instructor as well as being easy to understand. The section covering equipment will serve well as a guide to those of us with just enough information to make ourselves look very foolish. The section on notable bassists and the recommended listening list stands as a veritable "who's who" of my own personal heros. (Where's Patitucci?!) I will highly recommend this book.

George Reid Andrews seeks to redress this damaging omission by making visible the past and present lives and labors of black Latin Americans in their New World home. He cogently reconstructs the Afro-Latin heritage from the paper trail of slavery and freedom, from the testimonies of individual black men and women, from the writings of visiting African-Americans, and from the efforts of activists and scholars of the twentieth century to bring the Afro-Latin heritage fully into public view.

While most Latin American countries have acknowledged the legacy of slavery, the story still told throughout the region is one of “racial democracy”―the supposedly successful integration and acceptance of African descendants into society. From the 1970s to today, black civil rights movements have challenged that narrative and demanded that its promises of racial equality be made real. They have also called for fuller acknowledgment of Afro-Latin Americans’ centrality in their countries’ national histories. Afro-Latin America brings that story up to the present, examining debates currently taking place throughout the region on how best to achieve genuine racial equality.

Good comprehensive book that doesn't assume any prior knowledge on the part of the reader. I believe it's tailored more to those that don't have a 4-year degree.

Takes 300+ pages to say the same thing over and over

It's good for someone who knows absolutely nothing about teaching and is considering if this is the right path for them, but as far as helping an already educated teacher move into teaching younger kids, it is useless.
