In 1533 Katherine Willoughby married Charles Brandon, Henry VIII’s closest friend. She would go on to serve at the court of every Tudor monarch bar Henry VII and Mary Tudor. Duchess of Suffolk at the age of fourteen, she became a powerful woman ruling over her houses at Grimsthorpe and Tattershall in Lincolnshire and wielding subtle influence through her proximity to the king.
She grew to know Henry well and in 1538, only three months after Jane Seymour’s death, it was reported that they had been ‘masking and visiting’ together. In 1543 she became a lady-in-waiting to his sixth wife Catherine Parr. Henry had a reputation for tiring of his wives once the excitement of the pursuit was over, and in February 1546, only six months after Charles Brandon’s death, it was rumoured that Henry intended to wed Katherine himself if he could end his present marriage. But Henry changed his mind at the last moment, and Katherine Willoughby never became his seventh queen.
Hers was a life of privilege mixed with tragedy and danger, losing both her sons to illness and being forced into exile in Poland beyond 'Bloody' Mary's clutches. But Katherine kept her head on her shoulders when many of her contemporaries lost theirs for lesser reasons.

Renaissance woman
By Carole P. Roman
Well written biography about Katherine Willoughby, Duchess of Suffolk. Daughter of Mary De Salinas, lady in waiting to Catherine of Aragon, she was sent to live with Henry's sister Mary and her husband, Charles Brandon with the intent that she and her fortune would be married to their son. When Mary died, Charles, Duke of Suffolk married the fourteen year old girl instead of his son. Katherine Willoughby became a key player in Henry's court, acting as a lady in waiting to several of his wives. Along with Katherine Parr, Henry's sixth wife, she embraced Protestantism, enough so that when Henry died and his Catholic daughter became Queen she had to flee. It was rumored she had an affair with Henry, and when his sixth wife flirted dangerously with the reformation, Henry cast his eye on the widowed Duchess. She married a man of lesser rank, but maintained importance in the Protestant Reformation when she returned to England. Katherine Willoughby was a fascinating person, a woman ahead of her time. In a time when women appeared to be little more than chattel, married off for dynastic reasons, spunky Katherine Willoughby refused to be a victim of her circumstances and made the most of what she was handed. This was a woman that used her resources to send her life in the direction she desired. Faced with inconsolable tragedy when both her sons succumbed to the sweating sickness, she picked up the pieces of her life to carve out a new existence and create a family with Richard Bertie. She was a woman of both fortitude and courage, unafraid to forge ahead and speak her mind in a time when that could cause a beheading. I think Katherine Willoughby is often eclipsed by the bevy of woman who graced Henry's bed, and I loved this book that brought her out to shine as a rare example of a renaissance woman, perhaps even a precursor to the feminist movement in that she was a woman who thought for herself and wasn't afraid to show it.

Terrific Book About a 16th Century Heroine
By L. Lyons
This is a fabulous book for those interested in the Tudor court and 16th century England. It is well-written and well-researched and follows the facts. It covers key events to place Katherine Willoughby's life in context without getting bogged down in too much detail for the general reader. It is very readable, yet is a biography rather than a fictional account.
Katherine Willoughby was a fascinating character and it is astonishing that no one has written a biography of her in the last 60 years before this book. She knew everyone of importance for the fifty years in the middle of the Tudor Century.
That said, it does have this title--"Henry VIII's Last Love"--as a marketing hook. I assume the publishers decided this would be a good way to attract attention to the book among those who are interested in the period but who would have no idea who Katherine Willoughby, Duchess of Suffolk,
was. David Baldwin does not really make this claim in the book. Rather he reports some gossip and discusses it. Maybe it was a possibility, more likely, it was not. What is unquestionable is that Katherine was often at the count of Henry VIII--her mother had been Katherine of Aragon's closest friend and she was likely named for Queen Katherine. Her first husband was Henry VIII's best friend. She was a lady-in-waiting to three of Henry's queens. She was there and an intimate of the royal circle. In the end this is no big deal. It is just a marketing ploy. But the book itself is terrific.

good detail, but premise is misleading
By Amazon Customer
I am still reading this book (got it today), but the title and concept is wrong. The idea that Henry 8 was in love with Katherine Willoughby is pure conjecture. I suppose the current title will sell more books than "the life of Katherine Willoughby." However, readers wanting to know about a secret love between Henry and Katherine, will be disappointed.
This woman is definitely worthy of a biography in her own right. But David Baldwin doesn't need to get readers to Katherine Willoughby by false pretenses.
