Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, by Gene F. Mazenko

A completely modern approach to statistical mechanics

Gene Mazenko presents an introduction to statistical mechanics from the modern condensed matter physics point of view. Emphasizing symmetry principles, conservation laws, and the consequences of broken symmetry, all of which are crucial to a fundamental understanding of statistical physics, this volume discusses the role of broken translational symmetry in treating solids.Professor Mazenko develops a firm basis for the choice of macrovariables or thermodynamic variables, stressing the importance of Nambu-Goldstone modes. He develops this theory beyond the usual examples of simple fluids with discussions of magnets, superfluids, and solids. Based on the author's more than 30 years of experience with this subject, Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics:
* Develops the structure of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics from fundamentals
* Highlights the approach of coarse graining in statistical mechanics
* Discusses ergodic theory and information theory
* Treats phase transitions in a number of specific applications
* Includes copious examples and end-of-chapter problems
* Gives full development to the rich history of this topic

Look for Mazenko's forthcoming volumes, Fluctuations, Order, and Defects; Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics; and Field Theory Methods in Statistical Mechanics. Combined with this self-contained volume, these works span the entire graduate-level program.

Review
“...deserves careful consideration for a graduate course in statistical physics. It covers the standard material in an authoritative, clear fashion, and provides many avenues for exploring more advanced applications....I look forward to the publication of subsequent volumes and I expect that the entire set will become a standard in the field.” (American Journal of Physics, July 2003)

"this is a rather illuminating discussion" (Statistics & Decisions, Vol. 19, No. 3, 2001)

"...This book will be useful for advanced graduate students and for scientists that are working in other fields of physics and mechanics..." (Zentralblatt Math, Vol. 983, No. 08, 2002)

"Through the simple but appealing physical arguments in the book, its recursive treatment of issues…its encompassing discussion of the basic aspects of matter in its different forms and its exhaustive historical references, readers...will find an opportunity to recreate the intellectual adventure of forging a statistical mechanical view of reality." (Mathematical Reviews 2003j)

Inconsistent

Although the discussions of the topics are usually clear and concise, this book is not well organized. Obvious lack of adequate editing aside (numerous typos, grammatical errors, mislabeled figures, etc.), many of the end-of-chapter problems are not really coherent with the way things are introduced in the particular chapter. A few problems require knowing stuff that is explained later in the book. The book alone, therefore, is not suitable for self-study.

It might make a good supplemental reading since the discussions themselves are pretty good. However, for an academic book like this one, it is also important to have a good index, and unfortunately it is not particularly useful either.

Overall, I think the problem about this book is editing, or lack thereof. Time will tell if the book stands as a course textbook, but unless a new edition comes out with some improvements, I do not see why we should choose this book over some other alternatives, such as Chandler.

Deep and varied treatment of modern statistical mechanics
By kutraj
Equilibrium statistical mechanics presents a more modern approach to Statistical Mechanics, with condensed matter as its main thrust. The subject matter is, in my opinion, well sorted out. It does not follow the usual route in introducing graduate-level statistical mechanics (like for instance, Pathria does) and this offbeat (and slightly more involved) nature is evident right from Chapter 1, which includes a lengthy discussion of the ergodic hypothesis. The list of references at the end of the chapter is pretty exhaustive in most cases, with references to historical articles scattered throughout the text.

There are several things that can be found in this book that are not easily located in other standard texts on Statistical Mechanics. For example - a microscopic viewpoint of the stress tensor in solids and a rudimentary exposition on Shannon's entropy.

I also think that this book falls prey to the temptation to introduce second quantization when it might not have been absolutely necessary. This is possibly the reason why it seems slightly confused in its scope. This is perhaps the single reason why this book would not make a good introductory text for statistical mechanics, for say a beginning graduate student or the advanced undergraduate. One other quirk is that the equations are not numbered chapter-wise --- setting off in the middle of Chapter 5 to find equation (1566) in the text is not the most pleasant task.

That said, if you have prior experience with statistical mechanics (I'd say perhaps at the level of Pathria's book) then there is much insight to be gained by reading this book. I think Mazenko's expertise in the area is pretty evident given his oft-times excellent explanation of several subtleties that are often ignored or are left for advanced texts in the subject. One example that struck me is the derivation of the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions using second quantization. I have never seen that approach before and it made me like this text even more.

The problems at the end of the chapter are very assorted. Unlike Kubo, for instance, there are no hints/ solutions. Also, the problems are non-linearly organized - I think they're meant to be worked out while reading the text, not as an exercise at the end of a chapter. They are not meant to be in increasing order of difficulty but follow the text. There are even references to some of the problems in the middle of each chapter and I think it is usually rewarding to solve them.

If your research interests coincide with statistical mechanics or condensed matter, I'd highly recommend this book. Some of the explanations in the text are worthy of the price.
